NBC News produced the below video report based on a reporter of Somali origin who returned to Somalia to talk to Al Shabaab members and one of their chief spokesmen. Much of the discussion centered around the attack on the Kenyan shopping mall a few months previous. There is little need to comment here. Simply take them at their own word.

The presentation provides some insight into why they believe that they are the righteous ones. We, of course, differ. I'd like to see their organization liquidated, but anywhere in the world, those who can provide a modicum of peace and security can obtain at least the aquiescence of a civilian population.
