A Berkeley Student Speaks Out on Anti-semitism on Campus

Below from the Daily Californian, is an article by a Jewish student on the topic of anti-semitism on campus. (Hat tip JJ Surbeck) It is in response to the recent whitewash by the Dept. of Education, Office of Civil Rights

That's much more thoughtful and better written than the material you've linked to in the past. Now, if students like this one are prepared for the nitty-gritty of documenting specific incidents, and responding to them point by point, rather than broadly decrying an undefined atmosphere perpetrated by and unstated percentage of a large student population for unstated motives, they might actually begin to move the situation in a better direction.

Students who are anti-Zionist are not necessarily anti-Semitic, but some are. That has one set of answers, but,

Students who, e.g., are Americans of African descent who have picked up some variety of anti-Jewish sentiment require a different set of answers, and,

If we are talking about MECHA having some anti-Jewish bias (I don't know that they do, but its possible), that would have yet another set of answers.

There might be five more.

Assault and battery needs to be prosecuted as such, vandalism treated as vandalism, and no particular notice taken of the motive.

Speech is a different matter, although offensive speech can create a hostile work (or study, or living) environment.

This all needs to be documented and responded to in detail, not vaguely waved as a broad concern.

As well as the piece was done, complaining to the UC system is like pushing a string. I agree with Findalis for a number of reasons. I wish the Jewish benefactors of the UC System would wake up to reality.

Findalis should be easy to spot soon. She'll be the only Jew in Chicago proudly wearing a yellow star.

Complaining to any bureaucracy is like pushing a string, Miggie. How did you respond to complaints from the employees of that factory you used to supervise, before or after you moved it to Haiti?

Persistent documentation and working step by stop through every formally available recourse, bringing the truth to light and invoking whatever penalties exist on paper, is the only way to bring these words to life -- and to test how real the complaints are.

I understand that King Christian X of Denmark proudly wore his Yellow Star.

Will you proudly wear a yellow star?
