More Atrocities in Nigeria and Obama's Feckless Response

Hat tip Weasel Zippers

A familiar scenario in Nigeria. The Islamist terror group, Boko Haram, attacks a school and murders 30 people, many of whom were burned alive. Weasel Zippers has the story below.

Meanwhile, our feckless administration in Washington continues to caution the Nigerian government and military to act with restraint and not violate the human rights of the Boko Haram killers. Below is what President Obama said about Nigeria while touring the African continent last week (Nigeria Tribune).

"PRESIDENT of the United States of America, Barack Obama, has tactically lent his support to the school of thought alluding the growing terrorism in Nigeria to poverty, blaming the upsurge of terrorist groups on the fact that “countries are not delivering for their people and there are sources of conflict and underlining frustrations that have not been adequately dealt with”.

He also took a stand against Nigeria’s employment of military option to tackle Boko Haram when he ruled out military solutions in tackling terrorism, urging governments “to give people opportunity, education and resolve conflicts through regular democratic processes,” noting that these would make it less likely for terrorism to take root."

Wow.

Hopefully, that was all for public consumption, and nobody is denying the fact of Nigerian corruption, which is of legendary proportions-even by African standards. That does not account for the type of bloody religious fanaticism that we are seeing not only in Nigeria, but throughout the Middle East and parts of Africa. It is not just about poverty; rather it is more about an ideology.

Hopefully, Obama privately told Nigeria to do whatever it has to do to rid us all of Boko Haram.

Obama is right about two things:

1) Boko Haram has been able to recruit and find cover because of corruption and mismanagement by the Nigerian government.

2) Heavy handed military pursuit of Boko Haram can easily, and often has, created more support for Boko Haram among civilians angered by the way the military treats them in its pursuit of Boko Haram.

However, it remains necessary that people who torch schools and shoot students be hunted down and exterminated.
