US Labor Department Spending Money to Establish Unions Overseas
"Sequester? What sequester?"
Here's a question for all you UC Santa Cruz Community Studies and History of Consciousness majors:
In such tight economic times, and with a sequester in effect, should the government be spending millions of dollars in tax-payer money to establish unions and promote collective bargaining-in other countries?

Explain this one to me, if you can.

Gary, this may be a duplicate posting, my machine went haywire on me for a minute as I was doing it. Sorry bout that.
Boy, if this is true, it should be right up Siarlys' alley. I do wonder if he is prepared to make a voluntary contribution in excess of his Federal tax bill (if he has one) to help fund this so I won't have to.
There was indeed a time in this country when unions were required. Currently, and probably previously, unions benefit only their membership, which is small indeed. They do not help the average non-union worker or family, or the companies/organizations for whom they work (ask Hostess). They increase the price of goods and services for everyone, including union members, with no corresponding increase in quality of those goods and services. Etc., etc., etc.
In my view, in the somewhat distant past the term "union made" had some legitimacy. No more. In fact, many union activities range anywhere from embarrassing to criminal with considerable frequency.
Of course its money well spent. If unions are strong everywhere, then American jobs will not be undermined by cheap labor elsewhere. Miggie is crying crocodile tears, because he's a retired sweat shop overseer (by his own boastful admission, in the columns of Fousesquawk).
And now we have more crocodile tears from elwood... who wants all the moral high ground of how much we used to need unions and all the convenient low ground of denying that bosses working their employees beyond what human civilization should demand while paying them peanuts even exists any more.
Its true we need to do more at home, not just overseas. Fight For 15!
Boo hoo
