"Take Me Out to the Ballgame...."

I managed to catch the last half of today's Cub game on TV. Lo and behold, the Cubs were beating the world champion Giants 4-1 behind the strong pitching of Edwin Jackson. Alas, it all fell apart in the 6th inning when Jackson forgot where the plate was. Walks and wild pitches were the order of the day. Four walks and five wild pitches-all in the 6th inning. When it was over (the 6th inning) the Giants were leading 5-4 and Jackson had a bar of Lifebouy in his hand.

"Where's the ball?"

But it wasn't over yet. Some ditzy actress named Julia Sweeney sang "Take me out to the ballgame" during the 7th inning stretch. She should have sung "Take me OUT of the ballgame" in honor of the Cubs pitching.

Anyway, the Cubs came back and took the lead in the bottom of the 8th. The stage was set. The only thing missing was that Carlos Marmol wasn't coming in with his suicide vest. It was Shawn Camp.  Camp got the first two outs and it really looked like someone was going to save a game for the Cubs and they would split a 4 game set with the champs.

You know how this is going end, right?

Sure enough. Two and two pitch, Hunter Pence hits a homer to tie it. In the tenth, the Giants score three more-aided by a balk by Camp as Cub manager Dale Sveum watched helplessly from the dugout.

"Ain't my f*****' fault! Epstein's the f*****' guy!"

Ah, but there is good news:

One thing about baseball is on any given day, any team could win. There are no undefeated seasons for any team.

Last Brewers game I saw (a Vietnam Vet with access to a box seating area with lots of food served up invited a whole bunch of Big and Little Brothers and Sisters) the Cubs won. They didn't win the series, but they won that game, and it was solid playing, not dumb luck.

Hang in there, our day for the World Champion Chicago Cubs is coming.
