Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher  1925-2013

Just a couple of comments on the passing of Margaret Thatcher.

There were two great British leaders in the 20th century; Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher. Mrs Thatcher was a strong-willed woman who recognized that the free market was the best system for her country and the world. She was also a great partner for Ronald Reagan in standing up to the forces of totalitarianism. Unfortunately, her country has been on a downward slide since she left office.

Thatcher's greatness was not that she was the first female prime minister of Great Britain. She was a great prime minister-period. It is quite possible that in 2016 we will elect our first female president (Hillary Clinton), a woman who rode her husband's coattails into national prominence-quite unlike Thatcher, who did it on her own accomplishments. In my view, ten Hillary Clintons could not make one Margaret Thatcher.

It is also instructive to see how the far left of the international community is trashing her on the day she passed. Just as they are mocking the death of Pastor Rick Warren's son, they are saying hateful things about Thatcher.

That is what they are.

Facts don't matter to the left. She had a fantastic record. One data point was the unemployment rate which went down from 12.8 % at one point soon after she was in office to 5.8% when she left office. In foreign affairs she fought a war with Argentina over the Faulkland Islands so the inhabitants and islands would remain British. This was validated recently when the Faulklanders voted in a referendum some 97% in favor of remaining British.

The left's world view is not challenged by facts. They simply ignore the success of free market constitutional republics and ignore the poverty and failure consequent to all socialized or more leftist societies.

Unfortunately for them, facts are stubborn things.
