Pope Francis I- An Encouraging Sign For Jews

I am cross-posting an op-ed written by Rabbi Abraham Cooper of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. I had the chance to meet Rabbi Cooper at a conference in San Jose a few years back. As you will note in the below op-ed, the new pope took the lead in commemorating Reichskristallnacht in Argentina several years ago.

Without going into particulars, there had been concern that one of the leading candidates from Latin America had a history of anti-Semitic statements. There are many other issues to be concerned about in the selection of a new pope, but this selection has to be welcomed by the Jewish community.

Frances is a humble man. And honest one too. He is a breath of fresh air for the Catholic Church. Who knows what reforms he will bring to the church, but he might even change your mind Gary about returning to their fold.
