Is There Anything to the Rumors Around the Pope's Resignation?

The Vatican is angrily denying rumors that the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI had anything to do with the priest pedophilia scandal that has been going on for so long or to a recent in-house report on corruption within the church.

Here is the Italian report from La Repubblica:

It is obvious that Benedict is quite frail. Yet, I heard this brought up on local LA radio the day his resignation was announced (John and Ken Show). Keep in mind that the LA diocese has been rocked by the recent release of thousands of pages of documents that show that Cardinal Roger Mahony (now retired) covered up dozens of priest pedophilia cases over the course of several years.

As to Benedict personally, he was previously accused of covering up wrongdoing when he was Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger in Germany back in the 80s. The below article is from Der Spiegel.

Prior to his elevation to Pope, Ratzinger headed up an office in the Vatican concerned with the enforcement of proper priestly behavior-for lack of a better word. In the below ABC report, Ratzinger was accused of making a pedophilia case against powerful Mexican priest, Marcial Meciel, go away.

Take it all for what it is worth. What has been clear for a long time now is that there is rampant pedophilia among priests, rampant cover-ups by their superiors,  and that something is really rotten within the Vatican. I hope my Catholic friends don't take this the wrong way. It is they who are victims.
