Irvine's "Great Park" Takes a Hit

As my loyal readers know, I try to keep abreast of developments regarding Irvine's Great Park, which after more than a decade and $200 million dollars, consists of a big orange air balloon, a parking lot, and a bandstand. The rest of what was formerly the El Toro Marine and Air Base is still a huge plot of dirt inhabited by gophers. No grass, no trees, no pathways, no streams, no buildings, no nothing.

The park is the project mostly of Irvine's political boss and current city council member Larry Agran, the
"man to see" in Irvine. Unfortunately for him and his sidekick, Beth Krom, they are now a minority of the 5-member city council of Irvine. Last night, the council held a contentious council meeting on the Great Park, in which Agran/Krom lost a series of votes to rein in the money being spent. Below is the report today in the Orange County Register by Kim Pierceall followed by an editorial comment by Register writer Frank Mickadeit.

Ground breaking

So now we can look forward to a closer audit (preferably by the IRS and FBI), no more money being paid to PR firms to put up signs pointing to the "Great Park", and a governing board consisting only of the 5 city council members, 3 of whom are willing to take a closer look at this boondoggle. Sounds good to me. Just think; if they had only planted grass and trees ten years ago, we would at least have  pleasant scenery to drive through. At this point, I say leave it to the gophers. Maybe the environmentalists can get involved here.

"Save the Gopher!"

Are you for planting grass and trees? Or not?
