Somebody help me out here. I have never been to Jerusalem, so I am wondering if the Jews were in the wrong part of town or what. I was never a fan of Irv Rubin and the Jewish Defense League back in the 70s and 80s, but they could have come in handy here.

You ask if the Jews were in the wrong part of town. These orthodox Jews were returning from the "Kotel" or Western Wall from praying. They were walking from the wall to the nearest gate of the walled city, perhaps to exit. The Palestinians were waiting for them as they came from prayer at the wall.

This is not civilized behavior, but there is a certain dispute over land in the area, in which Israel is also complicit. The old city of Jerusalem is sacred to Jews, Muslims, and Christians. Israel has officially accommodated all three (they could hardly exclude Muslims without destroying the mosque on top of the mount), but Israel continues to expel long-resident Arabs from areas of the old city, replacing them with new buildings more or less reserved for Jewish occupants.
Sitting down and sorting this out would cut the facade of rationale out from under the thugs who probably just like to beat people up and will grasp at any excuse available.
