As I write, I am watching President Obama speaking before the UN. He opened with remarks about our slain ambassador to Libya. He is explaining democracy to the audience. He is praising the "Arab Spring".
Now he gets to religious intolerance:
"A crude and disgusting video sparked outrage on the part of Muslims...."
"The US had nothing to do with this video."
Now he is speaking on freedom of expression.
I am waiting for him to say something about intolerance against religious minorities in the Muslim world.
I am waiting for an expression of outrage.
"There is no speech that justifies mindless violence."
He has just referred to the Coptic Christians in Egypt and "bullying of women". Good.
The tone of his words reminds me of the stern schoolmaster admonishing the errant schoolchildren.
Going after Iran. Supporting terrorism. Nuclear Iran cannot be contained. US will do what it takes to keep Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.
Just finished. Very statesmanlike, but I would have liked to see more outrage over the vile acts committed against the US. I still think he is giving too much validation to the idea that this all happened because of that video.
Yet, I think the representatives of the countries that have seen all this violence suffered a big loss of face in that assembly hall.
With certain reservations, good job.
