Friday's Orange County Register has an interesting report by Frank Mickadeit on that Great Park project for Irvine. As yet, all we have is a deserted El Toro marine base, which is a habitat for gophers, an orange hot air balloon, and a bunch of signs directing you in circles to "The Great Park". Yet, a ton of money has been spent on this project including an expensive ad campaign to promote it.

Just imagine: an artificial canyon. Imagine the shovel-ready jobs.
Irvine city council members: Are they digging the next grand canyon?
Let's face it, folks. This is the biggest boondoggle since Global Warming. My suggestion still stands. Either plant some grass over the whole area and be done with it, or declare it a protected animal (gopher) sanctuary.
"Splendid idea!"

Perhaps in spite of the best of intentions, fiscal restraint during a period of dangerous deficits and public debt restrains your city and county leaders from taking the bold, comprehensive action required to bring this resource to its full potential.
