More Fallout From the Trayvon Martin Shooting

Another assault has been reported on a white person in which one of the assailants stated that it represented "justice for Trayvon" (Martin). Fox News has the report.

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/04/26/suspect-attacked-white-teen-because-am-angry-about-trayvon/#ixzz1t7RoG81j

This is truly disturbing, and I think it is time for someone like Barack Obama, Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton to speak out. Of course, thugs come in all colors, and the thugs involved in these incidents do not represernt the black population as a whole.

The problem is that the Martin case has been inflamed by certain black leaders, the media, and, of course, the rhetoric of the New Black Panther Party. Too many irresponsible statements have been made. It has all led to hate crimes-in the truest sense of the word- to be committed in Ohio, Alabama, and now Chicago. And all the while, our Justice Department, under Eric Holder, does nothing. As for the media, these incidents are one-day stories or not reported at all.

Hate is hate, and it is wrong -irregardless of who the victims or perpetrators are.

@ Findalis,

Good point Findalis. The MSM, especially the race baiters have, in part, caused this racial hatred. I hope that the MSM will look at this objectively, which they can. But, I feel that they have another agenda. Here is some objective facts about Zimmerman, that was pulled togther by a responsible news outlet:

Business Insider put together some chronological bullet points highlighting the most important points:

• Zimmerman grew up in a mixed-race household
• He was an altar boy at his Caltholic church from age 7-17
• He is bilingual
• After he finished high school, he studied for and got an insurance license
• In 2004, Zimmerman and a black friend opened an Allstate insurance office (which soon failed)
• Zimmerman’s 2005 arrest for “resisting arrest, violence, and battery of an officer” occurred after he shoved an under-cover alcohol control agent at a bar when the agent was trying to arrest an underage friend of his
• Zimmerman married his wife, Shellie, in 2007. They rented a house in Twin Lakes. Twin Lakes is about 50% white, 20% Hispanic, and 20% black.
• In 2009, Zimmerman enrolled in Seminole State College
• In the fall of 2009, a pit bull broke free twice and once cornered Shellie in the Zimmermans’ yard. George Zimmerman asked a police officer whether he should buy pepper spray. The cop told him pepper spray wasn’t fast enough and recommended that he get a gun.
• By the summer of 2011, Twin Lakes “was experiencing a rash of burglaries and break-ins.” In several of the cases, witnesses said the robbers were young black men
• In July 2011, a black teenager stole a bicycle off the Zimmermans’ porch
• In August of 2011, a neighbor of the Zimmermans, Olivia Bertalan, was home during the day when two young black men entered her house. She hid in a room upstairs and called the police. When the police arrived, the two men, who had been trying to take a TV, fled. One of them ran through the Zimmermans’ yard.
• After the break-in, George Zimmerman stopped by the Bertalans and gave Olivia a card with his name and number on it. He told her to visit his wife Shellie if she felt unsafe.
• The police recommended that Bertalan get a dog. She moved away instead. Zimmerman got a second dog–a Rottweiler.
• In September, several concerned residents of the neighborhood, including Zimmerman, asked the neighborhood association to create a neighborhood watch. Zimmerman was asked to run it.
• In the next month, two more houses in the neighborhood were robbed.
• A community newsletter reminded residents to report any crimes to the police and then call “George Zimmerman, our captain.”
• On February 2, 2012, Zimmerman spotted a young black man looking into the windows of a neighbor’s empty house. He called the police and said “I don‘t know what he’s doing. I don’t want to approach him, personally.” The police sent a car, but by the time they arrived, the man was gone.
• On February 6th, another house was burglarized. Witnesses said two of the robbers were black teenagers. One, who had prior burglary convictions, was soon caught with a laptop stolen from the house.

What do most of those "objective facts" have to do with anything? Zimmerman was an alter boy? So what? Stalin studied in the seminary.

Most of those things have nothing to do with anything - neither damning nor redeeming the man.

@ Anonymous,

Taking one fact and comparing it to another individual ie; Zimmerman and Stalin both alter boys is lame. Stalin was not an alter oy from 7-17. When looking at a profile, one takes many samples to of a persons behavior over time to determine a personality trait. So, the facts count. Or, would you rather listen to the rants of Al Sharpton?

@Squid

Why do I have to choose between your insane rants and Al Sharpton's insane rants?

I mean, you list what college he went to. I could probably make a similar list of accomplishments for Ted Bundy. It has nothing to do with anything.

Any way you cut it, it was a tragedy that Trayvon died as he did. A tragedy not only for him and his family/friends, but to a somewhat lesser, but still real, extent for Zimmerman and his family/friends as well.

The legitimate primary issue is, of course, whether Zimmerman acted in self-defense. If he did, the equation is greatly changed. While we cannot be, and should not be, and I am not, blaming the victim, there is also a lot that can be said about Trayvon, not all of which is complimentary, which has/may have bearing on this issue and which may, unfortunately, indicate that he possibly/probably was responsible, at least in part, for his own demise..

We know, of course, that the vast bulk, if not essentially the entirety, of photos of Trayvon in the national media, and virtually all references to him by that media, have been of a “cute kid”, a high school football player in his uniform, an angelic countenance, etc., effectively depicting someone in whose mouth butter would not melt. That, however, is most certainly not the complete story.

In a previous older post (April 24, 2012 8:27 AM), Siarlys suspected “---that Zimmerman is guilty of something less than second degree murder, something not premeditated, like reckless or negligent homicide. But that is for a jury to decide“. Let me do some suspecting of my own.

Squid posted Zimmerman’s apparent background, as well as other relevant factors, above. These remain largely unrefuted. In contrast, Trayvon’s background appears to be that of a dope fiend/highly probable dope dealer, a little sneak thief, and at least that of a “wannabe”, if not an actual, “gangsta”/gang banger.

By contrasting the two backgrounds, and including other stuff like the inappropriately altered NBC tape of the 911/dispatcher call, it is therefore fairly easy for me to suspect that not only is their no racial component involved, it is much more likely that Trayvon, rather than Zimmerman, was the attacker/aggressor in this incident.

And I further suspect that Zimmerman’s reported statements are therefore almost certainly much more credible than those of anyone who is on the outside looking in. And if I should be correct (and I guess we wil find out in time who is right), the tragedy/travesty would only be magnified if Zimmerman was deliberately overcharged in an effort to coerce a plea to a lesser offense, particularly when race pandering is in play (and I suspect it is), when he in fact may very well have acted totally in accordance with the law. And he may not have, either.

@ elwood

You do know that if Trayvon was killed by a fellow black person none of this would have come to pass. It would barely be a blimp on the radar.

And you do know that the only way his parents could sue George Zimmerman was if he was arrested and charged.

Funny about the last one.

If Trayvon had been killed by a fellow black person, and the police had that person in custody at the scene, he would have been charged. If he had gotten away, the police might not have bothered to pursue much of an investigation.

Stalin was a seminary student, not just an altar boy -- quite a few years there. Incidentally, considering the hierarchical nature of church discipline, that's not wildly inconsistent with what Stalin made of party loyalty and party line. When his mother was on her death bed, she murmured "What a pity you never became a priest." He was delighted.

elwood offers a much more summarized set of generalities about Trayvon than squid offered about Zimmerman. Some of the early "Trayvon was a gangster" stuff that popped up early on the internet was discredited within a few days, on such well-known liberal sites as The American Conservative. I have no doubt that Trayvon presented a somewhat formidable sight, perhaps not your first choice to hire as a receptionist, but there hasn't been hard evidence that he was a dope dealer.

As for the gangsta rap wannabe stuff, I once heard a ten year old squeal "I'm a pimp" and express shock when I countered "You never sold your sister for money." He had no idea what the word really meant. Its an aura, not the substance, that guides casual conversation.

I doubt that Zimmerman is a racist per se. I am familiar with the prevalence of crimes committed by young black men, quite as much as I am with what nice people my young black friends are. He may well have been negligent or reckless, and someone is dead who would have been alive, if Zimmerman had simply remained in his car. There may have been some level of racism, a reflexive subliminal sort, in the manner police accepted his story, possible bullied witnesses into supporting it, and dropped the matter far too quickly.
