Murder in Florence

The attack in Liege is not the only killing carried out today in Europe. In Florence, a man opened fire in two outdoor markets, killing two Senegalese street vendors and wounding three others before taking his own life. La Stampa has the below report (in Italian).

Without translating the entire article from La Stampa, the report states that the killer was a 50-year-old Italian man identified as Gianluca Casseri, who had a reputation as a far-right extremist. It appears that his intended targets were Senegalese street vendors, of which there are many in Italian cities. Casseri parked his car near the scene of the first shooting, proceeded on foot to the market and opened fire shooting three Senegalese, killing two. He then fled back to his auto and drove to another plaza in Florence where Senegalese street vendors gather. He parked his car in a sub-terrainian parking lot, proceeded on foot to the market where he again opened fire. Fleeing back to his car, he was confronted with police at which point he shot himself.

Many of the Senegalese survivors reacted in outrage accusing the Italian people of racism. The sub-title of the above article quotes one; "Damn Italians. You are racists."

Italy has tens of thousands of immigrants from Africa, many of whom support themselves selling trinkets on the streets of major cities. The country has also been inundated with refugees from Tunisia and North Africa. Clearly, it is leading to social problems in the country. Murdering them is never a solution.
