They are all there pitching in to bring down the capitalist system. What's really tragic about this is that the lines are being clearly drawn between Americans. Make no mistake; the Democrats and the Obamaites are behind the scenes stoking this in an effort to stir up support in the next election. The big issue is and will be the economy. This is an effort to put the blame for the bad economic situation on the rich, the corporations , the banks and, of course, those evil Republicans. It is nothing less than a tactic to divert attention away from Obama's record (which is disasterous), Obamacare, Stimulus Package, bank takeovers, auto company takeovers and all the rest.
If you are poor, blame the rich. If you don't have a job, blame someone who does. If you are contributing nothing to society, blame someone who is. This is class warfare, and Obama et al are performing it in classic fashion. So much for The Messiah who was going to bring Americans together. Obama will ultimately go down as the most divisive president in US history.

Now that is what Lance used to call a "straw man." I know that doesn't mean anything to you, because teaching English at UCI is as degenerate as teaching community studies at UCSC, but it does have well established meaning.
The point of the protests is not to blame those who have jobs. The point is to blame the corporate HR departments and executives who have run up record profits during a "recession" by continuing to lay people off, doubling up the work on those who remain.
Those who have jobs need a break from the sheer size of the work they are expected to do for far too little pay. Those who lack jobs need to be paid for taking some of that workload off the shoulders of those expected to do too much for the money. Customers deserve to have phones answered in less than fifteen minutes.
And don't forget all the companies that refuse to hire anyone who has been out of work. A lot of these OWS people would be working now, and have no time for occupation, if not for that ludicrous policy (which companies are beginning to deny with a straight face now that its becoming a public issue).
So much for the spontanious protests. This is a well organized (think community organizer) mob designed to take down the economic system, create class warfare, as stated, and generally to aggrevate people. This is pure Saul Alinsky tactics, especially the visits to the homes of the "milionaires". SEIU was mentioned and this scummy union is very involved, as Steve Lerner the head man at the union, has been spotted in the crowds in Chicago. Siarlys Jenkins is a computer virus run out of the White House that is directed to selected conservative blogs in an effort to jam them with contradictory opinions, confusing arguments, foggy logic, absurd explanations and convoluted historical analogies that don't make any sense.
Gary, Siarlys is the only one who ever makes sense on your blog (except you of course at times). I understand why no one on your blog understands him.
I just think that you should all count your blessings, and stop being so arrogant about less fortunate people.
And who are the less fortunate people-the mobs on Wall Street. Take a look at them. Walk by and smell them. Maybe some people are less fortunate through their own faults.
I suggest you go to India and look at the people living on the streets in squalor or people with leprosy who can do nothing but beg. Those are the less fortunate that we should help-not what I see on Wall Street. They are looking for the government to give them a life. They need to do it for themselves and stop scapegoating people who work, produce and contribute to society.

Nothing wrong with teaching English Gary. Also, there is nothing wrong with teaching how to analyze the processes of a community. In your case, the manner you use and abuse (or deride) the English language on this site leads me to doubt the quality of teaching you may be capable of. (Probably you do fine in the classroom, you just ignore here what you know you must teach there. Facts are inconvenient, if stubborn, things, and rational thought can get in the way of clinging to well established prejudices.)
Squid, this is not a well-organized protest. I have some experience at what an well-organized event would entail, and this falls woefully short. Among other things, a well-organized event would have rigorous public health and clean-up operations. Read John Steinbeck's "In Dubious Battle." I also know, from the horse's mouth, that SEIU has very limited influence, although some locals would like to provide some support and encouragement to get better organized.

Is that why Andy Stern was the most frequent visitor to the WH until he stepped down as SEIU head?
Gary, last I knew, the White House is in Washington, D.C., and Wall Street is in New York. Also, I believe the "Occupy Wall Street" campaign began over a year after Andy Stern retired. You are getting off topic here. The topic, set by your self, was OWS, not union influence in Washington.
Andy Stern is someone you should have oceans of appreciation for, since you are so down on "union thugs." After the 1199 health care union merged with SEIU, and Stern became president, he systematically purged the old-style local presidents (many of whom literally had Italian surnames) who had simply been milking the unions to accommodate their preferred lifestyle, while signing sweetheart contracts with complacent employers.
In the last 15-20 years, SEIU has been conducting aggressive organizing campaigns that actually delivered improved wages and benefits to employees. You might not like that either -- employers preferred dealing with the thugs -- but its been clean.
Don't tell me THAT is off topic -- you raised the name of Andy Stern. And as for my identity, I'm a semi-self-employed part-time wage-worker (some of each) from the midwest heartland, who never sought any public assistance, and is tired of elitist conservatives from the coast maligning the "real people" of America.

It was Squid who originally raised the issue of SEIU involvement in the Occupy Wall Street protests. I was responding to that point, providing the data that SEIU has little influence in or over the Occupy Wall Street protests. You then started rambling about how many times Andy Stern has been to the White House. Perhaps you weren't paying attention to Squid. Lord knows he seldom has much to say.
