The question begs: Don't these bozos have better things to do in Congress than try and regulate what ballplayers put in their mouths? Isn't this typical of the Government-Must-Control-All mindset so prevalent among the Democrats?
First of all, chewing tobacco is not nearly as prevelent as it was 50-60 years ago. I tried it once when I was playing college and semi-pro ball, and it was disgusting, so I never did it again.
Next thing you know, senators will be drafting legislation to ban players from scratching their nuts while they stand around in the outfield waiting for that next fly ball. Kids might be watching, you know.

You're right. This is really stupid, and a complete waste of time.
What I want these senators to be focused on is:
a) Sifting through the proposals coming out of Occupy Wall Street, writing the more meritorious ideas into legislation,
b) Re-instituting the entire Glass-Steagall requirements, instead of the wimpy half-way measures of the Dodd-Frank bill,
c) Refining and expanding the 2009 health care reform act, to provide several flexible new options, and at least three public options, which will compete against each other as well as whatever the private sector can offer.
The Democrats in Congress remind me of a Shakespearean play:

Left wingers ALWAYS know what is better for the society. They then attempt to FORCE the citizens to comply.
Forget Liberty! They say, we'll tell you what and when to chew, what kind of light bulbs you must use, what kind of healthcare and healthcare coverage you MUST have, etc., etc., etc.
According to the left, the only thing you can't touch and have to leave alone is sodomy.
Miggie, its not too many years since the little Maoist parties were running around advocating the execution or re-education of homosexuals. I think they were trying to prove how far they had removed themselves from their counter-cultural hippie former associates.
Don't rush to label the "left-wing" position on any cultural issue. Stalin allowed abortion before he banned it.
