Frederica Wilson and Racism

Rhinestone cowgirl

A few days ago, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (D-FL) told an audience that the "real enemy is the Tea Party".

This week, she told an interviewer that black unemployment was due to racism. (Hat tip Real Clear Politics)

Yes, Congresswoman Wilson, there is racism, and you are a poster girl for it.

Ms Wilson, naturally, is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, that anachronistic body that only allows African-Americans to join-and they'd better be Democrats too. Radio talk show host Dennis Prager remarked today that this organization by definition of its very name is racist. In addition, many, if not most, of its members practice racial politics on a regular basis. Maxine Waters is the prime example. The CBC operates on the philosophy that it is "us vs. them".

To Ms Wilson, I also say that the Tea Party's main goal is to reduce the size of government and reduce spending. They were not created because a black man became president. And what is the crime of the Tea Party? They have held peaceful rallies and voted, which is how they "plan to make sure Obama is a one-term president".

Ms Wilson, white people are not your enemy.

As I've said before, the Democratic Party in general, and the Congressional Black Caucus in particular, need to learn how to speak of the Tea Party with contemptuous humor, not build it up to be some kind of powerful monstrosity.

They also need to read Sun Tzu on The Art of War. You defeat an enemy by studying the different parts and breaking them up, not by treating the enemy as a unified monolith. There are almost as many reasons for people identifying as "Tea Party" as there are people who do so. Most of them have little to do with the first three declensions of why people identified with the label in 2009.
