Fousesquawk Flashback-D Day

"This is Nic Robertson broadcasting to you from the white cliffs of Dover in Southern England, where on this day, June 6, 1944 Allied troops under the command of French General Charles de Gaulle have just landed and are scaling the cliffs under German fire as I speak to you in an effort to liberate Nazi-occupied England.
"Excuse me, soldier, could you tell me what your mission is?"

"Mais oui. We are here to make sure that German stooge, Oswald Mosely, does no harm to the Welsh minority people. Gotta go."

"Can you tell me where the Americans are?"

"Les Americains! Pfui!"

"There you have it, Anderson. Back to you."

"Thanks, Nic. Stay safe out there. Meanwhile, President Roosevelt is continuing his South American good will tour. Today, he announced a new trade package to the Brazilian people. He also spoke on a secure telephone with Secretary of State Cordell Hull in Paris to get the latest on the European Cup soccer matches. Tomorrow, he heads to Colombia to apologize for the US helping Panama break off from that country in 1903 so we could build that Panama Canal."

"Over my dead body!"

You are dead.

"So the question begs. What is the end game here? Are we trying to achieve regime change in Berlin-or just prevent Hitler from killing more people? Nobody in Washington seems to be able to answer that question. Hopefully, the Leader of the Free World, French President Jacques Chirac, will make an announcement soon."

Can't make this stuff up, folks.

Somebody seems to be spamming my email... oh, its you Gary. Yes folks, this man CAN make it all up, and he does. Its easier than going to the library and reading a real book to learn some real history. (He's getting more hysterical all the time... maybe we should hide the history books and hope he calms down).

"Good news, mein fuehrer, Mr. Fouse seems to have bought the latest black ops, hook line and sinker."

When the French are becoming the leader of the free world, I am getting hysterical.

As I said in response to one of your other posts, "What free world?"

I don't see a unified military command emerging, and I'm not sure we want one in this situation. We don't have enough mutual confidence or unity of purpose.

My understanding is that the U.S. was (as usual) best positioned to begin operations before it was too late, but, our generals are (rightly) worried about stretching ourselves too thin, and our president (rightly) wants some of the other nations concerned to carry some real weight in financial costs and risk of service men and women putting themselves on the line.

Not a bad idea.
