UCLA Speeches

On January 14, 2011, the Muslim Student Association held their western regional conference at UCLA. Among the speakers were Siraj Wahhaj and Amir Abdel Malik Ali. The MSA has released the video of the speeches by Wahhaj and Ali, which I am posting.

The speech by Siraj appears to be completely benign although he said many phrases in Arabic, and I don't know what they meant. Ali's speech was also less volatile than he usually gives, but make no mistake; he says that the "American empire is in decline". He also ends his speech by calling on the audience to recite "the pledge of allegiance". It is hardly the pledge of allegiance that we know. It is something entirely different.

Imagine these two men speaking in front of a university audience of students. After you see their speeches, you can see the danger. Both are gifted speakers. Both are charismatic. I am much more familiar with Ali because I have heard him speak many times and have interacted with him during the Q and A's. His weakness is his belief in conspiracy theories which can easily be rebutted. Don't make the mistake, however, of thinking he is stupid. He was student body president of San Francisco State University. It is sad that this man uses his enormous talents to make young people think so ill of their own country.

Aside from everything else offensive about Malik Ali, I find his economic theories really strange. He says first that "the money is there" and next, that there is a battle between Wall Street and the corporations versus the poor people and the citizens. He says congress is torn between the two as to where the money gets allocated.

I know, it is a childish view of the world.

I wish I had the chance to ask him just where the money is and who created it. He hasn't a clue. I don't think that he has given economics much thought. It is clear that he has given a lot of thought to Islamic studies which, to me, are as bizarre as his economics.
