Reports are coming in that Libyan troops are machine-gunning demonstrators in Bengazi's central square and that more than 200 may be dead. This is no Tunisia, and this is no Egypt. Gaddafi will not be like Mubarak and simply resign for the good of the country. Not this man. He will kill every last protester if he has to. Why should we be surprised?

This man has been in power for four decades. I remember when he first splashed on the scene. The far left in the West, in their usual manner, thought he was a dashing figure, indeed. Yet this is the man and the regime that brought down a Pan Am jet over Lockerbie, Scotland. This is the man and regime that arranged for a bomb to be set off in a Berlin GI bar. It was Gaddafi's "diplomats" who fired on demonstrators from the windows of their London embassy killing a British policewoman-only to be sent home under diplomatic immunity to be given a hero's welcome by Gaddafi himself. Mostly recently, Gaddafi strong armed the pusillanimous British prime minister, Gordon Brown, to release the one imprisoned Pan Am bomber, who also got a hero's welcome from Gaddafi and his henchman. And every time, we in the West allowed this bastard to stay in power when we should have taken him out. (Reagan came close.)
So why should we be surprised now that Gaddafi's troops machine-gun protesters in the streets? Where are the Western leaders like Obama demanding that he step down as he did with Mubarak (for all the good it would do)?
Amazing what a little oil can do.

This is what you wanted Mubarak to do in Egypt, right? It would have promoted stability, at the cost of a little collateral damage. Why, oh why, didn't Obama tell him to pull out the machine guns?
As for why President Obama isn't making strident statements to the world about Libya, when was the last time the government of Libya cared WHAT the President of the United States had to say?
It reminds me of the time I heard that the Communist Party of Northern California sent a telegram to the government of South African to protest apartheid. Do you think anyone was listening?
Well, we may see in Libya what would have happened if we put our weight behind Mubarak in Egypt. And then the people of Egypt would have blamed us for the carnage, and you know who would have been waiting to pick up the pieces... yes, you do know... the Muslim Brotherhood of course.
Just don't forget in your analysis that it was the W. Bush administration that restored full diplomatic relations with Libya.
Anonymous,
And Bush was wrong to do it as long as Qadaafi was in power.
Siarlys,
I think I acknowledged that any statement Obama makes would be ignored in Libya. Read the text.
I never understood that he was forgiven. He is a complete nut, a dangerous one, and always has been. He is sitting on a lot of oil though.
I wonder if the anonymous Muslims who occasionally contribute anti-Semitic posts here noticed the fact that no such riots or similar disturbances are going on in Israel, which is located in the epicenter of of all this tumult.
That's because Israel is a DEMOCRACY. The people there (including the Arab minorities) vote and they occasionally change governments civilly and peacefully, as we do here. They have a functioning civil system and a fair judiciary, which are other necessary elements in a democracy.
They have their flaws and problems, just as we do, but there is a fundamental difference between their government and all those surrounding them. (Incidentally, they vote the same way the US does in the UN 97% of the time.)
All this rioting and demand for change has been going on in countries that are governed by varying degrees of Islamic Sharia Law.
Do you really think they would be better off with more or less Sharia Law?
Do you really believe that they are rioting because they want MORE Sharia Law?
Do you really think that even more Jew-Hatred in the Islamic countries that are rioting now will improve their lives?
The primary people who want Sharia Law here in the U.S. are the Malik Ali types and their anonymous followers who bob their heads up and down in agreement. Guys, listen to Malik Ali, don't believe your lying eyes.
.
According to the latest NY Times report, Qaddafi has lost control of the eastern half of Libya, and is determined to hold on in the capital by any bloodshed necessary. Maybe his soon to be unemployed female bodyguards will get jobs with Silvio Berlusconi.
