T-Shirts at Memorial??

(Photo via Holger Awakens)

Everybody at the memorial in Tucson last night got a t-shirt. Tacky?

You be the judge.

Tacky doesn't even cover it.

Did you know they were selling food and drinks during the Extravaganza?

Now that was tacky!

The right are really going to just now try and complain about the commercialization of a tragedy after all of the tacky 9/11 merchandising we've had to endure for the last 9+ years? Please.

That commercialization was mentioned in Mrs Obama's message to the "mothers of America" today.

This Tee-Shirt give-away is beyond tacky! This is a continued effort by the Obama re-election PR group to"not to let a crisis go to waste". The clapping at the memorial when Obama gave his speech, was equally beyond tacky. Try to rememeber the last memorial of murdered individiuals that had clapping as part of the ceremony. I am beyond disappointed with this Administration.

This President needs a lesson in decorum. At a memorial, you eulogize the passing of loved ones. You do not allow yourself to make this an opportunity to campaign. The Tee-Shirts had a slogan, "Together We Thrive". This happens to be an Organizing for America, (Obama's campaign camp). Disgusting! Here is the link to the blog by John Barry on February 11, 2008, from Organizing for America.

Squid, you are one sandwich short of a picknick most of the time. What does the administration have to do with people behaving badly at the memorial? Should they have had them arrested? Where there only Democrates there?

Ingrid,

Besides your disrespect, you have not read the information in the "LINK" provided in my comment. If you did so, you would have found out that it was Obama's loyal Organizing for America followers (many are students) who came up with "Together we thrive". If you looked carefully at the picture in the blog, you would have read "Together we thrive" on the Tee-Shirts. Organizing for America is Obama's creation for his election effort. He is still campaigning, even at a memorial. Hope this is helpful!

I get it. Squid wants "Organizing for America" to morph into a tightly controlled, highly disciplined organizations where students do what they are damn well told, and individual initiative is not allowed. He is offended that the president was not in firm command of these free American citizens.

That said, the t-shirts were in very poor taste, as was the clapping and cheering. Obama might have said so at the time, but good lines are always easier with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, by those of us relaxing at home. Getting right in a spontaneous sound byte isn't so easy.

Incidentally, when people are out in the hot sun for a few hours, having food and drinks on hand could be considered an essential part of the logistics of holding such an event. Was it disrespectful to have the bathrooms open and available?
