Did Harry Reid Say "The War is Lost"?

This week, Harry Reid debated Sharron Angle. He was asked about the famous statement he made about Iraq, "The war is lost".

Here is the question and Reid's response.

MITCH FOX: Senator Reid, you were quoted as saying the following: 'The war is lost, and the surge is not accomplishing anything as indicated by the extreme violence.' Do you believe that your statement demoralized the troops, and were inaccurate as judged by the success of the troop surge?

HARRY REID: Mitch, I first met General Petraeus in Iraq. The statement that I made was made following General Petraeus saying the war cannot be won militarily. He said, and I said, the war can only be won militarily, economically, and diplomatically. That’s why after I made my statement, and General Petraeus made his statement, we did the surge then, not later. And it was the right thing to do.

Point:

Reid is lying. His statement about losing the war was made after the surge began. In fact, as he completed his "war is lost" statement, he stated that " the surge is not accomplishing anything."

"Now I believe, myself, that the secretary of state, the secretary of defense and you have to make your own decision as to what the president knows: that this war is lost, that the surge is not accomplishing anything."

Shame on the voters of Nevada if they send this clown back to the Senate.

Unfortunately, it could equally well be said, "shame on the voters of Nevada if they send that lunatic Sharon Angle to the senate." Isn't Nevada the state which offers voters the option to vote for "None of the Above"? If I lived in Nevada, I might mount an active campaign to try to get a MAJORITY on that line.

As usual, I could have handled that question better than Reid did. But I am (Gary, you might even sympathize with this) tired of filling in a common sense response that a Democrat SHOULD HAVE been able to think of for themselves.

After the muddled results of this election are in, which I am sure will confound ALL the pundits, I look forward to a rejuvenation of both parties, which would do well to dump De Mint, Pelosi, Reid, Boehner, dump the politics insiders running the public face of the "Tea Party," sideline the "political correctness" freaks on the Democratic side, and start competing for who can offer a better way forward for America, rather than who can most effectively accuse their opponent of being

a) a right wing extremist bigot,

b) a liberal, socialist, or Marxist (which are really three different things)

c) a hypocrite, which is indeed usually a matter of the pot calling the kettle black.

I am not at all impressed with Sharron Angle. I think she is a weak candidate. Let's face it however, politics is not drawing in the creme of the crop -in either party. At least I am comfortable she will vote the right way-which is mostly what senators do-vote.

These candidates, for better or worse, have survived the crucible of inspection, the twists and turns of internal party politics, and the whims and ebb and flow of voter sentiments. They are not the smartest or the most truthful, only the survivors. We should not expect perfect people and should give them their props as finalists in a tough struggle.

Having said that, I think Reid should be thrown out of office for the liar and charletan that he is. He has helped stage manage one of the worst destructive legislative sessions in history. I don't want to go into a litany of all that has gone wrong during his leadership. It is a long list with substantial negative consequences.

Angle is an unknown and we can only speculate about how well she will do. We know she reflects the views of a substantial portion of the electorate that recoils from the Obama agenda. In that sense, anyone would be better than Reid but in this case she seems to have the better sense of what would be better for America.

Gary, you have hit on the reason I would, after all, be comfortable with Reid being re-elected. However often he puts his foot in his mouth, he will vote the way I approve of more often than Sharon Angle will. That's a rather low bar, from my seldom humble point of view.
