Congratulations to the Chileans

People I know who have lived in South America usually say that Chile is the nicest country down there. I have been to three South American countries and enjoyed them all, but I have always wanted to visit Chile. It was truly inspirational to see the Chilean mine rescue this week. I have a Chilean student at UCI who was in my class last quarter, and he is walking on air with pride.

We know that Chile received some help from the US (specifically NASA) as well as Britain and Israel. Having said that, I think it is appropriate not to overstate our contributions lest we appear to be trying to hog the stage. I thought President Obama went a little overboard in mentioning the specific American entities that lent a hand.

This was a great moment in Chile's history. Their president has acknowledged the international assistance and expressed his gratitude.

Let's leave it at that.

Viva Chile!
