New Fighting in Gaza-Here We Go Again?

Norman Finkelstein-"Independent scholar with a PHD from Princeton"

Israel's air strikes in Gaza in retaliation for the rocket attacks against the Israeli cities of Sderot and Ashkelon are increasing fears that we may be heading to a new conflict between the Jewish state and Hamas-controlled Gaza. Of course, if that happens, look for the pro-Palestinian and pro-Hamas crowd in the US to take back to the streets and campuses-joined by the usual suspects from the far-left.

http://www.csmonitor.com/World/Middle-East/2010/0801/Hamas-attacks-A-bid-to-scuttle-direct-talks

If the intelligence sources mentioned in the above Christian Science Monitor report are accurate, and Hamas launched the rockets into Israel to stop direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, then it flies in the face of what the Israel-hating academics like Norman Finkelstein have been saying since the January 2009 conflict. Finkelstein (who is considered by most sane observers to be a discredited crackpot) told us at that time that Israel had chosen war in Gaza because Hamas was becoming "too moderate and too reliable a peace partner." (January 31, 2009 at UC-Irvine-I was present.)

Of course, Finkelstein made no mention of the Hamas charter, which dismisses any thought of negotiations, rather calls for the total destruction of the Jewish state to be replaced by a Palestinian state under shariah law. Indeed, if Hamas wanted a peaceful settlement-as Finkelstein insists-and repeated at UC-Irvine in May when he said that "every Palestinian entity wants a peaceful settlement with Israel...." (Yes, I was present for that gem too.)

....then why do they warn Mahmoud Abbas not to proceed with negotiations?

Well, truth and common sense be damned. A new round of fighting will jump-start the career of Finkelstein as he gets new offers to appear before gullible university audiences. Same for the so-called "discussion forums on the Middle East conflict" that feature no pro-Israel voices-only a panel of the same old tired thrown together groups of Middle East Studies professors and their left-wing brethren from the various humanities departments. We all know the names.

I guess we can also look forward to seeing that goofy former British MP, George Galloway back on US soil, as well.

(He's the one in red.)

Galloway, as he continues his deep dark descent into total madness, is racking up countries that have declared him persona non grata faster than most world travelers collect stamps in their passports. Unfortunately, this nation still allows him to enter and create his mischief on behalf of his pals in Hamas.

But as the old song goes; "bring in the clowns.....

Don't bother, they're here."

What I'm waiting to see is whether the government of Israel is astute enough to recognize that,

If Hamas launched this attack with the intention of derailing direct talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority...

...then the best way to stick it to Hamas is to give high priority to direct talks with the Palestinian Authority, and preferably to consummate a final agreement, which will leave Hamas high and dry, looking very silly and out of the loop.

History does not give me great hope that Bibi is anywhere near that astute.

If we were though, it would also be the best way to shut up the loonies you refer to. They are lunatics. They are not leftists. They are not trying to lead the working class to seize control of the means of production, or even paying much attention to a better minimum wage law, or the Employee Free Choice Act. In fact, most of these loonies appear unfamiliar with means of production, or even with production, or for that matter, with work.

Real workers have real jobs.

That one really left you speechless, didn't it Gary. Can't keep up your usual line of attack when confronted with simple facts and common sense, eh?

Siarlys,

Was there a question in there?

As to the protesters, they are leftist lunatics, who likely have no jobs, joining forces with the pro-Palestinian Islamics who want Israel wiped off the map. I've been watching these crowds in person long enough to know.

Lunatics yes, leftists, they wouldn't know what socialism is if they tripped over it in broad daylight.

I'm more interested in what the Israeli government is going to do - a body which does carry some weight in that part of the world - not what some lunatics in safe cities in the USA are going to do.
