Idiot Alert! Meet Peggy West, Milwaukee County Supervisor
Peggy West, ladies and gentleman, liberal Democrat and Milwaukee County supervisor made this whopper as the council was debating Milwaukee business-namely the Arizona immigration law. According to Ms West, Arizona's law makes no sense since unlike Texas, Arizona is located far away from the Mexican border.
You can't make this stuff up, folks.
Ms West must be a proud graduate of the University of California Santa Cruz Community Studies Department.
To be sure Gary, I could never be taken seriously here again if I didn't say something pithy.
I think it is a wonderful testimony to America as a great melting pot that up here, 1500 miles from the Mexican border, we have Hispanic community leaders who have been Americans for so many generations that they have acquired surnames like "West," speak the King's English -- or at least as close as the working class descendants of Polish and German immigrants speak it -- and have forgotten where exactly the border is or what is across from it.
I don't live in Supervisor West's district, but if I did, I would primarily be concerned with how she votes on funding the local bus system, which is one of the more important things county government is responsible for. I can't find out from a quick Google search, because the web is full of commentaries from local yokels more or less aligned with you, jumping on this obvious fit of ignorance for the same reasons you did. Hey, she left herself wide open. Its a natural.
Now, a more substantive question might be, what constructive role could county boards in counties with large Hispanic populations, some distance from Arizona, play in this debate? Boycott Arizona doesn't grab me. Neither does, "Yeah, round up those wetbacks. If we can intern and deport the little guys, we'll put the Zetas right out of business!"

Anonymous,
Perhaps out of an overabundance of caution, I rejected your comment. I have enough enemies at UCSC.
The proud product of a liberal education.
