Arizona Governor Jan Brewer has issued a statement calling on President Obama to do his job and enforce the immigration laws. How does our government in Washington reply? Let's recap the latest developments.
President Obama has now said this week that he can understand the frustration that Arizona feels that the government in Washington has not solved the immigration problem. (I am paraphrasing.) His solution is for the government to pass "comprehensive immigration reform". Translation? According to Obama, Arizona is upset that the government has not yet granted amnesty to illegal aliens.
Yesterday, the President of Mexico, Felipe Calderon, addressed Congress and expressed his firm opposition to Arizona's law. That brought the Democrats to their feet applauding-including Janet Napolitano, Eric Holder and Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar. The Republicans remained seated.
Calderon should be embarrassed that he is the head of a state where millions of his people are desperately trying to flee to earn a decent living while he criticizes any effort to control American borders-as Mexico controls its southern border-military and all.
Now there are reports that ICE director John Morton has told the Chicago Tribune that ICE may not cooperate with Arizona in taking custody of and deporting illegal aliens apprehended by state authorities. If true, that is an astounding statement. Fox News has asked ICE for clarification and received a lame statement that they are studying the Arizona law to determine their (ICE) reactions.
What's next? Is ICE going to help bring people across the border into the US?
What is so wrong with the US-or any nation- controlling who enters its country? What is so bizarre about enforcing the law? It seems that this administration and Congress has literally turned our law upside down.
