Health Care-The Great Sausage Race Nears the Finish Line

All due apologies to the Milwaukee Brewers

For everyone who has heard the old joke about lawmaking resembling a sausage factory, what's going on in Washington at this moment proves once and for all that it's no joke.

In all likelihood, the Democrats will emerge victorious today, but talk about winning ugly! The big suspense still revolves around the pro-life Democrat Bart Stupak of Michigan, who, along with ten or so other Democrats, refuses to vote yes unless there is something in the bill that clearly bans federal funds used for abortion. At this writing, feverish negotiations are going on and it appears Stupak may still be "convinced". Apparently, this would involve President Obama, who could issue an executive order that would keep the ban in place.

(Wink wink, nod nod)

But wait!

Would it be legal for the President to change a bill that has become law?

In addition, if you talk to Florida Democrat Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, she says that if abortion rights are not protected, she may take her vote and several other votes away (more votes than Stupak has, in fact). Hmmm.

But wait!

How about if President Obama issues another executive order that would protect abortion rights?

But wait!

Can he legally do that once the final bill becomes law?

Maybe we'd better check the Constitution-you do remember the Constitution, don't you?

I forgot about it with the last administration.

Lance,

Only if you think the Constitution should apply to terrorists.

Lance Christian Johnson said...

It applies to Charles Manson and every other killer in this country. Why shouldn't it? Isn't he a type of terrorist as well? Isn't the rule of law what separates us from the terrorists? (Amongst other things.)

Gary Fouse said...

Lance,

Yes. For example, if a foreigner commits murder or any other crime in the US, he or she gets the benefits of the Constitution and all that. My argument is that terrorists should not be put into the US court system, where they will enjoy every benefit. I would rather see them tried by military tribunals like the German sabateurs who landed on US soil in WW2 and were captured.

Lance Christian Johnson said...

But those German saboteurs were fighting for a country that we were at war with. These guys don't represent a country's government, so it's not the same thing.

Gary Fouse said...

Precisely Lance,

Do you think the terrorists of today deserve more than those German sabateurs? I don't. They deserve much less.

Lance Christian Johnson said...

The way I see it is that if we're the "good guys" and we supposedly have a better system than the one they want, we show them that by the way we treat our prisoners.

You guys act like giving them rights is the same thing as using kid gloves on them!

Lance,

The fact is they are treated humanely at Gitmo. OK, so three, three top terrorists incl KSM were waterboarded and gave up info that saved lives. you wann a make a federal case out of it.

Gary, this is an assertion that you conservatives like to repeat as though it was a fact. True, those who were waterboarded gave up information that saved lives, but that doesn't mean that it was the waterboarding that made them give up that information. It's not like that was the only technique done on them, and you don't know for a "fact" that they wouldn't have given this information if they weren't waterboarded.

Waterboarding is torture. We are the good guys. The good guys don't torture.

What punishment do you think one of these terrorists would deserve if his only crime was waterboarding one of our men?

Gary Fouse said...

Lance,

If a terrorist waterboarded an american soldier for what purpose would it be? The fact is that our prisoners are routinely beaten tortured and murdered. None of that was done by terrorists in the interest of saving lives. It was done in the interest of simply being barbarians.

You're not answering the question.

Hi Mr Gary Fouse,

The nature of my comment will surprise you but I would really need THAT picture of a sausage making with a better pixel resolution to make a collage artwork for a London based contemporary art festival in August.

It would be very nice if you could help me or send me a link of where you got that picture from.

This is no joke, and I would be very glad you participate and follow the work development if you find it of interest.

All the best,

Charles
