Remember that post I put up on September 19, 2009 about the water crisis in the San Joaquin Valley of California caused by water being diverted out of concern for the Delta Smelt (a small bait fish)?
Republican congressman Gary Miller of Orange County has an editorial in the Orange County Register today on the on-going crisis affecting farmers in the San Joaquin Valley.

So three and a half months later, with the one-time breadbasket of America turning into a dust bowl and farmers out of work, Congress is still studying the matter.

I realize that you won't let my post through, but I have to wonder if you've ever heard of a little thing called the "food chain". If this fish goes extinct, the consequences may be far greater than one less bait fish in the world. For instance, I've heard that salmon fishers could be impacted.
But all you're doing is repeating the conservative talking points, which rarely involve considering all sides of the issue (even though you guys are really good at giving lip service to doing so without really doing it).
Guess what, Lance. You are published. Know why? Because your statement is so silly. Tell that to the farmers in the San Joaquin valley who are out of work. Match that against the loss of the nation's biggest breadbasket.
Salmon fishermen? If a bear can catch salmon, so can fishermen.
Wow. I'm the one being silly. Okay. Here's the deal:
Delta smelt is part of a food chain.
Delta smelt is eaten by salmon.
No delta smelt = a food source for the salmon disappearing.
No food for salmon = salmon dying
Salmon dying = salmon fishermen out of work
I remember learning this concept in fourth grade. Is it really that hard?
LC: All you are regurgitating is the garbage and tripe we hear
from the left who is so in love with lies about
global warming, opps,
I mean pretty normal
climtae change.
You meantion lip service? Wow,
the demosocialistacrats that
are in power now are
re-writing the words lip
service everyday.
Want to come up to where
I live and talk to all
the people who have lost
their jobs due to some
stupid tree hugger, earth
muffin policies that have
wrecked havoc on my states
economy for a very long time.
Oh, those suppossedly "endangered species" are actually doing
better than in the areas
that were put off limits AND
the problems were found out 15 years later to NON man caused.
I have friends who are farmers
and ranchers. How about I arrange a visit for you to go talk to the hands they have had to lay off?
One other item: Most of us
"conservatives" are
NOT afraid to publish
most comments. No matter
how ridiculous an
opinion may be, left
or right, almost all
deserve to have their
opinion heard.
Ludicrous or not.
Earth muffin. I like that. Can I use it?
OK Lance, is the Delta Smelt the only thing that salmon eat?
Is it any wonder why this country lags so far behind the rest of the industrialized world when it comes to science?
Seriously, people - do you really not understand the food chain? Why is this even a liberal/conservative issue?
My only point, which is no doubt not going to be understood, is that this issue is more complicated than cutting off farmers to save nothing more than a small bait fish. Can you guys give me at least that much?
OK Lance, is the Delta Smelt the only thing that salmon eat?
If it's a major food source, then that's irrelevant.
Lance,
The reason we lag behind other countries is because of the dumbing down of our educational system.
And you are not willing to make any compromise with your enviro philosophy when it means shutting down an area that used to be America's breadbasket. What about our food chain?
According to you, if I spray ants in my kitchen, I am cutting off the food source for anteaters and threatening their existence.
(LOL)
No anteaters-no UC-Irvine.
(LOL)
Gary, I am with Lance on this one completely. I have said it before and I'll say it again, this PatriotUSA is an idiot and his thinking dangerous, and I can't wait for people who think like him, or like you for that matter, to wake up one morning and see how wrong you were, exept I will see it too and suffer the consequences of the total disregard of natur and the ways of God.
Patriot, read the last chapter of the Bible, if you know how to read properly, it says "He will bring to ruin those who are ruining the Earth". You're one of them.
And you are not willing to make any compromise with your enviro philosophy when it means shutting down an area that used to be America's breadbasket.
When did I say this? I wasn't even aware that I had an enviro-philosphy. It's interesting how you seem to know my mind better than I do.
According to you, if I spray ants in my kitchen, I am cutting off the food source for anteaters and threatening their existence.
Yeah, you got me - especially since so many of us depend on anteaters for our jobs and food.
Let me do a copy/paste to see if you can deal with my actual point. (My prediction? You will continue to obfuscate.)
My only point, which is no doubt not going to be understood, is that this issue is more complicated than cutting off farmers to save nothing more than a small bait fish. Can you guys give me at least that much?
"Can you guys give me at least that much?"
After my usual careful consideration, no. It seems pretty simple to me. Farmers need water. What about OUR food chain.
Ingrid,
For how long have we had farmers? Do they ruin the earth?
What about OUR food chain.
Last I checked, people at salmon. And it won't just be salmon that are affected. That's just one example. Do you really not realize that destroying an entire ecosystem might have an impact on us? This is our food chain we're talking about!
For how long have we had farmers? Do they ruin the earth?
Yes, some of them do. It's peoples greed or ignorance or general selfishness that one head of lettuce has to look like the other, one apple has to look like the other. To achieve this, lots of food is wasted, fields are poisoned with fertilizers because too much is produced and then thrown away. Poison gets into the water etc. on and on.
They overfished the crabs around SanFrancisco, and now they are almost gone and the fishermen are out of jobs. I remember when they complained about limits. Gary, this is a serious problem, you can inform yourself before you plead for more distruction of the planet, even if it is only about a little fish.
One more, in Thailand, the rice farmers have turned their rice paddies into salt marshes, because it is more profitable to raise shrimp, the blue fin tuna is almost extinct, all because every idiot has to eat sushi (me included). Food that used to be a luxury because of the cost of producing it has now almost become a staple. I stand by what I said, though there I differ with Lance, God has told us, and we will have to pay the price. If you confess to be a Christian, which most so called conservatives claim, read the scriptures, it's all there.
