Below is a letter I have received from the Save Darfur Coalition, which I would like to pass on to you.
"Dear Gary,
Sudan continues to defy the United Nations arms embargo.
Ask your Senators to sign the Feingold-McCain letter to Ambassador Rice by 5:00pm Friday.
Nearly two years after United Nations peacekeepers were deployed to Darfur, the Government of Sudan works at every turn to block their efforts to protect civilians.
Recently, the United Nations Panel of Experts responsible for monitoring the warring parties in Sudan issued a report confirming what we all already know: Bashir's regime continues to defy the United Nations arms embargo as well as international humanitarian and human rights law.
In response, Senators Russ Feingold (D-WI) and John McCain (R-AZ) drafted a letter to Ambassador Susan Rice, the Obama administration's representative to the United Nations. Their letter asks her to speak out publicly about these violations and ensure that troops and arms movements and additional sanctions are carefully reviewed by the Security Council.
Contact your Senators and ask them to sign the Feingold-McCain letter by 5:00pm Friday.
In its Sudan Policy Review, the Obama administration pledged to "work to more concretely transform widespread international concern about Darfur into serious multilateral commitments." This is an important opportunity for the Obama administration to show that its commitments are more than just empty words.
I wanted to make sure you, a key activist for Darfur, had this opportunity to let the administration know that together we will hold them accountable and will continue to encourage them to prioritize Sudan.
Ask your Senators to sign the Feingold-McCain letter and tell the Obama administration to lead for peace in Sudan.
As the world debates how to address the crisis in Darfur, the Government of Sudan continues to abuse its people and flout international law with impunity. If the Obama administration does not build an international coalition to hold Bashir's regime responsible for its actions, the conflict in Darfur will persist and the people of Sudan will continue to suffer at the hands of their government.
Thank you for your activism and your support."
Sincerely,
—Mark
