Announcing the Fousesquawk Poll on Global Warming

"Do I get a vote?"

This is to announce the definitve, official Fousesquawk poll on Global Warming.

During the next 24 hours, you will have an opportunity to weigh in on the issue of Global Warming. This is your chance to put the issue to rest once and for all. All you have to do is enter your vote in the comments section of this blog.

The question is:

Is Global Warming real or just a lotta hooey?

Polls close at midnight Wednesday night. The results of this scientific poll will be announced on Thursday (sometime after I wake up).

Let every vote be counted!

And typical of conservatives, you have presented a false dilemma.

It is indeed real, but I don't think that it's fully understood. There is some solid science that we are having an impact on the environment, but the finer points of how much is still being debated.

I will tell you this, considering the "conservative" track record on science, I don't believe anything that they have to say.

And let's give the Al Gore thing a rest. He was just using his influence to further the cause. There are people who know A HELL of a lot more about science than either one of us who are behind the whole issue.

Shoot, even the Republicans are slowly, but surely, starting to get on board making some changes. Is this really something that we can afford to be wrong about if it is true?

So, I'll be the monkeywrench - I say "neither, but closer to real than hooey".

So I guess I will count that as a non-vote-invalid, hanging chad.

Al Gore is a nut. He flies around on his private jet telling us to walk to work.

Gary...this is beyond Al Gore. I know he makes for a convenient punching bag, but why don't you try taking on some of the actual scientists?

Shoot, I'm eagerly awaiting the following future fousesquawk posts:

Plate tectonics is liberal propaganda.

Olbermann made up the "theory" of gravity.

Germs? Evil spirits make you sick!

Lance,

Let's don't beat the Global Warming thing to death too much. I have more important fish to fry. There are scientists on both sides of the argument. Who is right? I don't know.

But my poll will solve the issue once and for all.

So much for global warming. It has been 19 degrees F. here all week and we expect snow again this weekend.

Gary Fouse said...

Findalis,

I will take that as a "hooey" vote.

The score is 1-0.

Jeebus Flipping Cripes. I could respect both of your opinions if it was clear that either of you had any idea what you were even talking about.

But yeah, I know, you don't need to actually know about something to have an opinion on it.

Lance,

You need to lighten up and have one of those beers you brew.

After all, ITS NOT THE END OF THE WORLD.

Sorry, Gary, I just find it offensive when people are proud of being ignorant.

Gary Fouse said...

Lance,

What I find troubling in that last comment was that even though this is an issue where there are two points of view with each side having a number of reasonable arguments to make their case, you act as if the other side are just a bunch of ignorant rubes.

Just because you have strong opinions on global warming (and gay marriage) doesn't mean those who disagree are.....uh, ignorant rubes.

Lance Christian Johnson said...

Of course not, Gary, but when you guys think that a cold winter somehow completely invalidates what's being said about global climate change, then you ARE being ignorant. It clearly shows that you don't even understand what the issue is. Shoot, you even admitted to not having read anything about it! How am I supposed to respect that?

Are there people who have issues with the climate change issue who can present an intelligent opinion that I respect? Absolutely. However, these people at least show some understanding of what it is before they debunk it.

The thing is, I don't really have all that strong of an opinion regarding global warming. I do have a strong opinion about people saying things that are misleading and ignorant though.

Sorry, but I have to call this one as it is, and it's not my fault if it leaves you feeling like a rube.

And regarding gay marriage, I'm still waiting on an argument that doesn't involve some logical disconnect. It's not my fault that you (or anybody else that I know of) can't seem to come up with one.

Gary Fouse said...

Lance,

What's the use of giving you my arguments when you just call them "strawman" or "logical disconnect" and all these other college debating points. Sometimes it just comes down to a couple of guys having a beer and arguing about some issue.

My points are simple on both issues. Before we completely change our laws and a thousands- year- old institution, and turn our economy upside down, shouldn't we take our time and make sure we get it right?

When it comes to gay marriage and global warming, I am simply not convinced.

If that makes me a rube, so be it. I'll be a proud rube.

Lance Christian Johnson said...

Gary, you misunderstand. I'm not attacking your positions. I'm attacking your reasoning for these positions. I'm sorry if you're not understanding where I'm coming from, but I call you out on strawmen and logical disconnect because, well, that's what you're doing!

And you keep talking about these things as "college debating points". That's got nothing to do with anything. Logic is logic, and you're either being logical or you're not. Sorry, but you're not.

Regarding global warming, there ARE good arguments against it, but "we're having a cold winter" shows that you don't understand what it even is. Climate change has nothing to do with the winter being cold or not! Am I being such an elitist by asking that you at least understand the topic on which you are debating before you have an opinion? A little intellectual honesty here, please?

And you keep talking about this "thousands of years old" institution as though it's remained exactly the same for all this time. Do you really think that? Because if you do, then well...once again, I have to call it like I see it. It used to be that people of different races couldn't marry. They used to have dowries, as the woman was seen as property.

Geez, it's like you're proud of yourself for not being informed, and you want me to respect that. How can I?

Lance Christian Johnson said...

Oh, and one other thing. This whole argument is almost exactly the same as the one my colleague and I got into with the former student who tried to defend the use of bad grammar. Guess which one you are? (Hint: it's not me, and it's not my colleague.)

Gary Fouse said...

Lance,

Why is it that in the last 100 years, the 1930s had the hottest years? I think one year in the 90s made it into that category.
