Iran Says We Surrendered

If Congress needed another reason to pass tougher sanctions against Iran, that country's president just gave it to them.

Congress, you know what to do.

Don't be a fool Gary. Every government has to present itself as triumphant to its own people and/or ruling powers. In order to keep the political space domestically to negotiate a substantive treaty, Rohani has to convince the theocracy that he's putting one over on the Great Satan, and convince the voters that he's making their country proud.

In the context of American politics, President Obama has to do the same thing.

Politics is like that. Behind the rhetoric, a deal is a good thing for the world. Too bad it takes so much obfuscatory rhetoric to make it feasible to do the right thing.

(If members of congress think that voters expect then to support Israel uber alles, they may be in for a rude awakening next fall. My sense is that American voters are no more willing to go to war for Israel than they are for Assad, or the Syrian opposition, or against ISIS, or much of anything in that part of the world.)

So we just let ourselves be humiliated by this third rate country and still defend them from Congressional sanctions.

So we deal with the world as it is and get the best results we can. Who cares what they are saying for domestic consumption? Our president will say some insulting things about Iran for domestic consumption too -- he has to, in order to get this done.

Actually, Iran is not a third rate country, whatever you and I think of its form of government. Its a relatively prosperous country with a rather well educated citizenry who are VERY proud and nationalistic, and it carries some real weight in its region, whether we like it or not. If you are hoping that The Iranian People will rise up against their theocratic overlords, insulting their country is NOT a good way to get there.
