The Riots From an Academic Perspective

Hat tip Hot Air

Leave it to some dopey university professor to call for the jailing of the Coptic Christian Egyptian (who is in the US) for the film that supposedly sparked riots against US missions in Egypt and Libya. Her name is Anthea Butler of the University of Pennsylvania Religious Studies Dept. *, and according to this Hot Air posting, this is her take on yesterday's events.

First of all, O Learned Professor, if this film was made by an Egyptian Copt, I would say he has standing to speak out since his people are being persecuted by the Muslim majority in Egypt. Since you are a professor of religious studies, you should know something about that, yet you want him put in jail?

Secondly, O Learned Professor, yesterday was the anniversary of 9-11. Only a fool would think that these riots occurred on 9-11 by coincidence. The film was an excuse.

* For all you UC Santa Cruz community Studies and History of Consciousness majors, the University of Pennsylvania is located in Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, to be exact.

It is official now. Free exercise of Speech, of Religion is not allowed to anyone who is not Muslim, not an elitist.

I wonder if she's related to that rabid anti Israel Prof. Judith Butler from UC Bezerkley.

You're wrong on all points Gary, but the professor is, despite that, ignorant and wrong as well.

The First Amendment does not allow for anyone to be arrested because they made an offensive movie, even if they are moronic, juvenile, crass, and cowardly.

What we need is someone to make a bold statement to the world, including but not limited to Muslims, on this very point.

I've submitted by draft proposal here:

Its near the end of 98 comments.

I'd like Rep. Keith Ellison to make the presentation on live international TV hook-up, cross-posted to YouTube.

But if he doesn't, someone should.

(P.S. Findalis, you used to work in a congressional office, and you don't know the difference between "It's official now..." and "some dopey professor in Pennsylvania said..." ???

And you wonder why I call you a bitter old woman...)
