Three more innocent Israelis are dead after a terrorist attack in Tel Aviv. Several more are wounded. One good piece of news is that the Israeli security tracked down the killer and shot him to death. 

What is most significant once again is how Palestinians celebrate these terrorist killings and honor the killers. The below article from Israel National News describes the joy in the mosques and Palestinian neighborhoods.

This is a disgrace to humanity. What is especially unfortunate is that we see this type of celebration and calls for more intifada not only in the Middle East, but in Europe and North America, where pro-Palestinian supporters call for intifada and chant, "from the river to the sea....., a call to wipe Israel off the face of the map.

Not only has there never existed a nation called Palestine-it is just a geographical term, much like New England- but the Palestinians have shown for several decades by their embrace of violence, terrorism, and Jew hatred that they are not worthy of having a state. In reality, the surrounding Arab world is fed up with them. They have just used them historically for geo-political reasons. When Trump was president, he pursued a sound policy of not paying money to them and helping Israel normalize relations with the Arab world, a policy that Biden has reversed-with disastrous consequences.

It would be nice if the UN and Europe would wake up to what the Palestinian movement truly is-a murderous one.

Sweden: Deportations and Security

Here is another depressing report out of Sweden. It appears in the counter-jihadist Swedish site, Doku, and is written by Magnus Sandelin and translated by Fousesquawk. With all the crime and terror concerns coming from the Muslim migrant community, it might be hoped that the courts would not only send criminal aliens to prison for their crimes but that incarceration would be followed by deportation.

More and more security threats remain despite deportation decisions

The number of people in Sweden classified as security threats continues to increase. Last year the number increased 25%, to just over 250. But few deportations are carried out.

This involves individuals who, according to Security Police (Säpo), engage in security-threatening activity, for example, with connection to terrorism or espionage. In the year 2020, there were about 200 persons in Sweden identified as security threats. In 2021, that increased by about 50, and the total number is now up around 250. That is information given by the Security Police to Doku.

But only a small portion of these cases lead to a person being deported from Sweden, even if there is a deportation order. In their annual report for 2021, the Security Police writes that the reasons for this are many. In a large proportion of the cases, there are obstacles to the executions (of the deportation orders).

Säpo invests large resources

"Even if these individuals are not Swedish citizens, and in many cases, have separation orders, deportations are not always executed, since individuals, among other things, may risk being vulnerable to threats and violence in their home countries," writes Gabriel Wernstedt, Säpo press secretary in an email to Doku.

But the authority also sees an increase in the number of persons who are judged to be a security threat but who continue to stay in Sweden though there is no obstacle to enforcing the deportation. That forces Säpo to invest large resources to follow up on individuals who really have no right to stay in the country.

"It is partly a matter of the concerned individuals not voluntarily cooperating in leaving Sweden, partly a lack of cooperation from the receiving countries,"  Säpo writes in its annual report.

On the other hand, the Security Police don't give much information on the cases and don't want to answer Doku's questions on, for example, which extremist environment(s) the individuals have connections to.

Doku and other media, however, in recent years, have reported on several cases where leading Islamists have been taken into custody awaiting deportation from Sweden, but where separation has not been executed on grounds of so-called obstacles to enforcement. There are, for example, Gavlemamen Abu Raad and his son, Raad al-Duhan, who, according to the Migration Court of Appeals would risk persecution if they were deported to Iraq.

Convicted for a terrorist crime

Another case is the imam Ali Berzengi, convicted in 2005 for preparing to commit a terrorist crime after he sent money to the terrorist organization, Ansar al-Islam. Berzengi has been under a reporting order to police, in principle, since he was released from jail in 2007.

In a decision on extended reporting duty, which the appeals court ruled on in 2019, (it) stated that Ali Berzengi, according to Security Police, reportedly maintained contact with several people suspected of having connections to  terror-related activity, and the court further wrote:  

"Given the background of the burdensome contacts that Ali Berzengi has in regards to his own activities, it is feared that he will commit or participate in terror crimes."

Ali Berzengi denied these reports in court.

It's Been a Bad Week for Duke

Things haven't been going so well at Duke University in the past week or so. First, its basketball team lost to arch-rival North Carolina in the NCAA basketball semi-finals. Now it is dealing with anti-Semitism in the usual platform of "Israel Apartheid Week".

In recent years, Duke has had more than its share of anti-Semitic issues on its campus. This year is no exception. I am cross-posting two articles dealing with the speaking appearance of some guy named Mohammed el Kurd, who is regarded by many as an anti-Semite based on his history of anti-Semitic rhetoric. He was scheduled to speak this week on behalf of Students for Justice in Palestine (an anti-Semitic organization) at Duke's annual Israel Apartheid Week, and his appearance-to the tune of $16,000- was causing worry among the school's Jewish students.

So who is this charming fellow, Mohammed el-Kurd? Here is what the Anti Defamation League says about him.

Italy: The Nigerian Crime Wave Continues

Italy, like virtually all Western European countries, is plagued by illegal immigration and resultant crime. Thanks to a feckless government, boatloads of so-called refugees from North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East arrive regularly carrying dozens, even hundreds of these fortune-seekers, mostly at the southern Italian island of Lampedusa. One of the many by-products of this human trafficking has been the establishment of a Nigerian mafia, engaged in drug trafficking, human trafficking, and various crimes of violence. They are particularly violent and vicious and are responsible for several murders in Italy.

And like so many other European countries, the courts are unable and/or unwilling to deal effectively with the problem when criminal defendants come before them. How else do you explain that this week, in the town of Brescia, near Milan, a 24-year-old Nigerian has been arrested for raping a woman late at night inside a cemetery? It turns out that the suspect had already served time in jail for raping another woman! Why was he not deported upon release? Your guess is as good as mine. So thanks to Italy's weak immigration policies, two more women have been raped. Thanks to a lenient court, there is now a second victim.

One obvious question is this: Is it fair to label all Nigerian immigrants in Italy as criminals and rapists? No. There are decent Nigerians who are in Europe on business, legal immigrants, and/or students. So this is not to single out  Africans in general or Nigerians in particular. However, it is a documented fact that there is a sizable Nigerian mafia operating in Italy, and they have been responsible for many crimes, some horrendous. But what do you expect when you admit thousands of young men who arrive on your shores illegally, and you don't even know who they are?

Raped in a cemetery by a Nigerian who had already been in jail for rape

A 29-year-old raped in a cemetery by a Nigerian already convicted for the same crime. This is what occurred in the Vantiniano Garden, the monumental cemetery of Brescia, where a girl was attacked by an African on Monday evening.

The incident occurred around 2200 hours when a woman reportedly went to via (street) Milano, probably to find drugs. The only person present in the area, however, was reportedly the 24-year-old rapist, who instead of giving her what she requested, reportedly lured her and dragged her with him to the cemetery entrance in order to tear off her clothes. The cries of the defenseless (girl) were not enough to keep the man from raping and robbing her.  

In those moments, in fact, nobody was aware of anything. Not even the residents of the area, who usually walk their dogs after dinner. It was fortunate that just a few minutes after the incident, a local Brescia police patrol car was passing by and found the young woman semi-nude and in tears crying for help, (and) immediately went into action looking for the one who had reduced her to this condition. Thanks to detailed information furnished by the victim and the quickness of the action, the officers, luckily, were able to stop the serial rapist a few hundred meters from the cemetery.

The young man, hiding his face under a cap in order to not be recognized, was immediately stopped and taken to jail awaiting trial. Meanwhile, several previous crimes have been discovered. The (non EU) foreigner, in fact, had reportedly already been in prison for having raped a woman in a similar manner to what happened at the Vantiniano Garden.

Meanwhile, the 29-year-old was transported to the hospital for the required checks. What remains, however, is the concern of the community, who never would have expected what happened, considering among other things, that it concerns a non (EU) citizen already imprisoned for rape. There are several people, in fact, who have asked on social media for the area to be made safer, which from dusk on, has reportedly become more of an attractive place for dealers and those with bad intentions.

Russian Oligarchs? What About the American Oligarchs?

 Depending upon which news source you follow, we hear a lot these days about Russian oligarchs. You know, the ones whose yachts we are seizing around the world, the ones behind Putin. These are the corrupt millionaires and billionaires who have made their fortunes in the post-Soviet era. They are some of the chief targets of the sanctions that the US and Europe are imposing against Russia in the face of this monstrous invasion of Ukraine, a country that just wants to be free and independent. I get it. I get all of it. I say, damn all of them.

But what about the American oligarchs?

I'm not talking about every rich and influential American. I am talking about the oligarchs who have made their fortunes in the world of politics and geo-political relations just as much as many of those Russian oligarchs. Do you want an example? How about the Biden family?

Here we have a sitting president in Joe Biden, who has finally reached the peak of his profession after  5 decades in Washington. Ironically, he became president while drifting into senility, a fact everyone but the mainstream press can see plainly before their eyes.

But Joe Biden's senility is not the issue here. It is his corruption and the corruption of his family.

I always knew from watching Joe Biden over the decades that he was an egotistical empty suit who never accomplished anything of significance aside from rising to the top like the proverbial turd, thanks to his seniority. Biden always thought he was the smartest guy in the room, but it turns out he isn't very bright. But it is in the last few years that we have learned of Joe Biden's corruption and how he has amassed a fortune through his political contacts and positions.

That takes us to his son, Hunter Biden, a drug-addicted "businessman" who has used his family connections to make millions of dollars in questionable dealings with questionable international partners in places like Russia, China, and Ukraine. Hunter Biden and his father are what I would call oligarchs.

Remember when Hunter accompanied his then-vice president dad to China on some kind of economic meeting and came back with a multi-million dollar business deal? Currently, Hunter Biden has been linked to multi-million dollar business deals with Chinese entities linked to the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese military. More specifically, Hunter arranged a deal with the Chinese energy company, CEFC, while Joe was vice president in 2016. CEFC is reportedly connected directly to the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese military. 

Remember when Hunter suddenly showed up on the board of directors of Burisma, the largest private energy company in Ukraine, which was under investigation by the chief prosecutor in Ukraine for corruption? He was making something in excess of $50,000 a month even though he had no experience with Ukraine and had no experience or knowledge in the field of energy. But his father was vice president. So when Joe Biden went to Ukraine, he demanded the president of the country fire the chief prosecutor or Ukraine would lose out on a big US loan. Voila! It was done. How do we know all that? Not through rumor or hearsay, but from Joe Biden himself bragging about it in a speech, which is readily available on the internet. The only thing he left out of his account was his son's role in the story. 

But Hunter, being the careless, drug-addicted con man that he is, left a laptop at a shop he had left for repair and forgot to pick it up. It has now been turned over to the custody of the FBI, which may or may not be a good thing. The laptop reportedly contains a treasure trove of Hunter dealings, emails, and references to "the Big Guy", who is almost certainly Joe Biden himself. The president's brother, Jim, apparently also an entrepreneur of sorts, is also mentioned prominently on the laptop. Rumors abound that the US Attorney's Office in Delaware is moving very quickly with a grand jury and that Hunter may be facing a tax-related indictment. Many sources are reporting this week that a grand jury witness was asked to identify "the Big Guy". I should note here that grand jury testimony is sealed and such information should not be leaking out-but apparently, it is.

So here is the question: Keep in mind Joe Biden is the president, and he runs the Justice Department through his attorney general, Merrick Garland, who at this point, seems to be willing to follow the White House program. The President also has Congress on his side through Democrat majorities in both houses. What will the US Attorney's Office in Delaware do with this case? Will it be silently closed with no indictments? Will there be a James Comey-like press conference to announce that no reasonable prosecutor would go forward with this case? I don't know, and for all I know, that may turn out to be the correct decision if the evidence is lacking. I do feel, however, that this case cries out for an independent special prosecutor not beholden to the White House. 

If Hunter Biden has engaged in corrupt business practices, the name of Joe Biden cannot be far behind. One of the messages that reportedly is on Hunter's laptop speaks of the distribution of (Chinese) payments, including "10% held by 'H' for 'the big guy". 

And where has our watchdog mainstream press been while all this is going on? Alas, there is no Woodward-Bernstein team on the case. The scandal has been mostly ignored by papers like the NY Times and Washington Post, who dismissed it all as "Russian disinformation". But just recently, both of the above papers have been forced to admit that the reports of Hunter's laptop have, indeed, been true-though hastening to add that there is no evidence tying Joe Biden to the whole mess. There is speculation that these two flagship newspapers may have learned that something is, indeed, going to come out of the Delaware investigation, and they are trying to get ahead of the story. Again, I don't know. But that is our American news media....speaking of American oligarchs.

Though not yet proven in a court of law, it appears to this writer that the Biden family is a classic example of influence peddling and taking advantage of high government office to make lucrative business deals with entities in countries like China and Russia, deals that are questionable at best and corrupt at worst and against the interests of the United States. And of course, there is always the tax issue, which is reportedly a focus of the Delaware investigation.

Talk about Russian oligarchs is fair. It is evident that they have done great damage to Russia and others. But while we are talking about oligarchs, what about the Biden family. Are they not oligarchs?

Italy: Saman Abbas Case Update: Skull and Bone Fragments Discovered

The case of the missing 18-year-old Pakistani girl, Saman Abbas, believed killed by her family for refusing an arranged marriage, has taken another turn. Over the weekend, a man out for a walk along the Tiepido River in the town of Torre Maina, came across a cellophane bag containing a human skull and bone fragments along a river bed. The skull is believed to belong to a female, and forensic studies are underway to determine if the remains belong to Abbas, whose body has not been found. Three family members are in custody in Italy charged with her murder while her parents have fled to Pakistan. Torre Maina is roughly 50 kilometers from Novellara.

A skull and some bone fragments wrapped in a  cellophane bag. The macabre discovery that a resident of Torre Maina, in the territory of Maranello, came across while walking along the banks of the Tiepido River. The remains, apparently of a woman, were turned over to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for the requisite findings. According to what Il Resto del Carlino (news) reports, investigators do not exclude the hypothesis that they could belong to Saman Abbas, the 18-year-old Pakistani who disappeared from Novellara, in the province of Reggio Emilio last year. 

The human remains

The alarm went out Saturday night. Alerting the Carabinieri was a passerby who noticed the presence of a suspicious bag on the banks of the Tiepido, at the point where a small bicycle and walking path winds. Arriving at the scene of the report, the officers of the investigative unit searched the bag ascertaining the contents. It appears to be human remains-a skull and other bone fragments, to be exact, apparently female. The hypothesis is supported by the discovery of some women's clothes at a location a short distance away from the cellophane packaging.

The hypotheses

At this time, no hypothesis is excluded. The remains were turned over to the experts at Forensic Medicine who will be tasked with determining the approximate age of the person they belong to. Not a negligible detail since it could provide interesting investigative clues. At this very time, the (officers) of the investigative unit, coordinated by the Prosecutor's Office of Modena, are going through reports of disappearances recorded in the past months in an effort to give an identity to the victim. "It is a disturbing discovery, so we hope it will clarify the matter in as short a period as possible. In the meantime, the local government will remain at the disposition of the police in case they need assistance," the mayor of Maranello, Luigi Zironi, commented.

Why they could be of Saman

According to the rumor picked up by Resto del Carlino, the investigators do not exclude that the bone fragments may belong to Saman Abbas, the 18-year-old Pakistani (who) disappeared from Novellara in April of 2020 (sic*). The hypothesis is supported by the criminal scenario presented by the Prosecutor's Office of Reggio Emilia, according to which, the young girl was killed by relatives after opposing an arranged marriage with a cousin in her homeland. Subsequently, the cadaver was allegedly hidden. At any rate, it will be necessary to await the results of the forensic-medical findings to dispel any doubt.

University of Chicago Campus Newspaper Cravenly Apologizes

Whenever I write about the latest university controversy involving "wokism", leftist insanity, anti-Semitism, etc., I routinely check to see what the campus newspaper is reporting about the issue, or if they are reporting at all. If you think the mainstream media newspapers in this country are biased to the left, you should read a campus newspaper sometime. They are almost always to the far left. Everybody is a victim, and the university "must do more on behalf of this or that marginalized group of people", blah blah blah. It is often downright embarrassing. Of course, we must remember that the writers are student journalists and under pressure to conform, but it's scary to think that many of these people will go on to write for papers like the NY Times, LA Times, or Washington Post. Most of the time, I blame the so-called adults in the universities who are stuffing these young brains with so much politically-correct nonsense.

Richard Cravatts has a disturbing op-ed in Israel National News, that describes the latest anti-Israel story out of the University of Chicago. The campus newspaper, the Chicago Maroon, had just published an op-ed in defense of Israel by two students. Of course, that didn't sit well with the usual suspects on campus, namely the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), who objected. So now, two head editors of the Chicago Maroon have posted a lengthy response in which they retract the pro-Israel op-ed, engage in "fact-checking", and apologize profusely to SJP, the "Palestinian community", and anyone else offended by a pro-Israel point of view. More than just apologize, the writers literally bow and scrape.

That a newspaper, be it campus, or big city, or otherwise, would pull an op-ed defending Israel and decrying anti-Semitism while cravenly apologizing to the Brown Shirt crowd is beyond scary. If these are the new rules, journalism -as Sean Hannity says- is dead. 

Tufts: The Bully Boys of SJP Want to Shut Down Pro-Israel Student Groups on Campus

"It is particularly disappointing that the Students for Justice in Palestine have chosen to ask fellow students to boycott not just companies but other student groups on campus," Collins continued."

The Tufts University (Massachusetts) chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) is just one chapter of a nationwide movement of Brown Shirt-mentality bullies who routinely use disruption and intimidation of students who support Israel as their main tactics. Of course, they support the BDS movement against Israel (Boycott, Divest, and Sanctions) and are at the forefront of this movement on college campuses. In reality, they are a front organization for the various Muslim Student Association chapters on campuses across the nation. They increasingly act as the lightening rod for MSA (on some campuses called Muslim Student Union or MSU) taking on the more militant actions on campus such as disrupting pro-Israel events, thus, allowing the MSA (a Muslim Brotherhood creation) to pose as a religious support group for Muslim students with a bit of social activism thrown in in the form of bashing Israel.  

So now we have the SJP chapter at Tufts University not only demanding the end of any university economic or academic links to Israel in the form of BDS, but also attacking Jewish groups on campus they consider as being pro-Israel. The obvious conclusion to be drawn here is that the Brown Shirts of SJP do not believe in the free speech of those they disagree with, a common tactic of fascism.

So it would appear that SJP at Tufts is not only asking students to support a boycott of all things Israeli, but not to join Jewish groups on campus, not just groups devoted to supporting Israel, but Hillel as well. What's next, a call to boycott Jewish-owned shops?

This is par for the course for SJP. Keep in mind, SJP was co-founded by University of California at Berkeley professor, Hatem Bazian, himself a Palestinian. Bazian has been accused of anti-Semitism for years-as far back as his student activist days at San Francisco State University. It should hardly come as a surprise that his organization should become known nationwide as a bunch of Brown Shirt bullies who use disruption and intimidation as their main tactics on behalf of the Palestinians. It's what they do.

Kudos to the Tufts administrators for not only rejecting SJP's call, but for pointing out why it is so objectionable.

France: Illegal Migrant Stabs Two Women

On Friday, two women were attacked by a knife-wielding man in the Basque area of Southern France. The suspect, described only as a 30-year-old man already under an expulsion order, is under arrest while his two victims are hospitalized with serious injuries.

Two women, ages 64 and 28 were attacked with a knife Friday evening in an apartment on the Jouandin esplanade in the Haut de Bayonne quarter. They were hospitalized in serious condition. A 30-year-old man was arrested and placed in custody Saturday.

A man was arrested Saturday after an attack on two women Friday evening. The accused man was placed in custody. He is a 30-year-old man who was already the object of an order to leave French territory (expulsion order) in the Rhone Department, explains the Bayonne Prosecutor's Office. Provided housing by the two victims, he had gone out to buy a knife after an argument with them, before returning to their residence to attack them.

Victims not yet interviewed

Emergency services responded Friday evening shortly before 20:30 after the knife attack upon two women, ages 64 and 28. The events played out in an apartment at the Jouandin esplanade, in the Hauts de Bayonne quarter.

They were evacuated in serious condition to the hospital center of the Basque Coast. Transported to the Pellegrin hospital at Bordeaux, they have not yet been able to be interviewed by the police, and, in particular, require facial surgery. When the emergency services and police arrived, the attacker was no longer at the scene. An investigation for attempted homicide has been opened.

Palestinians passing out sweets to celebrate a terror attack against Israelis

Never underestimate the gall of the pro-Palestinian lobby in the US. The month of March witnessed three deadly terror attacks against civilians in Israel by Palestinian killers. In these three separate attacks, 11 Israelis were killed, most of them civilians. This was widely hailed in the West Bank and Gaza where people poured out onto the streets and passed out candy. Thus, it appears that Israel may be on the brink of another so-called intifada (uprising). Previous intifadas in the past decades have cost the lives of thousands of people on both sides. The important point is that they were started by Palestinians.

And keep in mind also that intifadas are much more than marches, protests, passive resistance, and people using slingshots against the guns of Israel's military. They include murderous attacks against innocents, using guns, knives, bombs, or cars.

So it strikes me as particularly obnoxious when Palestinian supporters turn out in American cities and college campuses and proclaim their support for intifadas. Especially obnoxious are the actions of these people in their Palestinian scarves with the black and white doo-dads marching in New York City this week and calling for a "global intifada," as the Jewish News Syndicate reports. Keep in mind that New York City has a large Jewish population, and the city has experienced a disturbing number of anti-Jewish attacks in the last few years. This is evidence that the anti-Semitism rampant on university campuses has metastasized into our society at large-at least among certain segments of our population. It is troubling, and I lay most of the blame on the pro-Palestinian lobby in the US.

It is instructive that these people would be calling for a global intifada. They can define it as they want, but history has shown us that intifadas are murderous attacks against innocent civilians, women, and children. Combine that word with chants like, "From the river to the sea; Palestine will be free". The "river" is the Jordan River on Israel's eastern border, while the sea is the Mediterranean on its western coast. That means no more Israel and no more Jews. A global intifada would mean more deadly attacks against Jews on the streets of cities all over the world including here in the US.

That is a concept that the majority of clear-minded, decent Americans will never embrace. In spite of all the efforts of the pro-Palestinian crowd, which include appeals to blatant anti-Semitism, a solid majority of Americans still stand with Israel and reject this Jew-hatred that is deeply embedded in the Middle Eastern mindset.

The pro-Palestinian crowd would do well to remember that this is not the West Bank or Gaza, where acts of terrorism are celebrated. We have laws against violence in this country, and plenty of jail cells to accommodate these folks. We don't want their intifada in our country. It is time we stand up to these bullies. What took place in New York this week does not represent America.

Austria: Four Charged in Gang Rape at Linz Train Station

This week, a 16-year-old girl was reportedly gang-raped near the train station in Linz, Austria. Four teenage suspects are in custody, three Afghans and one Iranian.

Now all are under arrest. Two days after the group rape at the Linz train station, the 4th and final suspect has surrendered. The 15-year-old Afghan went to the police in Vöcklabruck. The other three suspects were transferred to the Linz prison Friday night. One was silent as to the accusation, the other three claim it was "consensual" sexual acts. According to the public prosecutor, the victim's charges against the boys will be massive. From the FPÖ (Freedom Party of Austria), they are "speechless" and "deeply affected", the Green (party) condemns the "disgusting act" and demands a "harsh punishment with no ifs and buts".  

Four youths reportedly attacked the 16-year-old German near the Linz train station. Officers from the Alien Police became aware and intervened. The perpetrators fled. A bit later, three boys-two 15-year-old Afghans and a 14-year-old Iranian- were arrested. The (police) were already hot on the heels of the fourth perpetrator when he turned himself in! He admitted that he was the boy that the police were looking for, but that he "did nothing wrong".

Suspects all known to authorities

The three other arrestees were delivered to the Linz prison  Friday night. The Linz Prosecutor's Office has requested pre-trial custody for them, (and) the court should decide Friday or Saturday. With young people, it is a bit more complicated, trustworthy people and translators are needed, according to the spokeswoman of the Prosecutor's Office, Ukrike Breiteneder. None of the three have criminal records, but are already known to authorities - for "small crimes", it was said.

One of the boys invoked his right to silence, explained Breiteneder, the other two claimed it was consensual sexual acts. The boys, however, have been clearly accused by the victim. It is reportedly "far from an attempt", rather it involves "repeated, completed acts by different perpetrators" she clearly states. It is still uncertain how the crime took place and if the perpetrators and victims were acquainted.

Facing up to 7-1/2 years in prison

 The sentencing range in case of a rape conviction for young people is up to 5 years. If the act results in a serious bodily injury- for example, in the form of a post-traumatic stress disorder-up to 7-1/2 years. For adults, the punishment range is twice as high. 

"Speechless and deeply affected"

The FPÖ security speaker for Upper Austria, Sabine Engleitner-Neu was "speechless and deeply affected". She took the act as an opportunity to call for preventive measures: "Who are the perpetrators? Were there warning signs? How can such crimes be prevented in the future?- These questions demand quick answers", says Engleitner-Neu. More financial resources are needed for measures to protect against violence. 

The Green Party women's spokesperson in the regional government, Dagmar Engl, warned against politically exploiting, "this disgusting act". "The perpetrators should be severely punished with no ifs and buts. This act is also at the expense of efforts in integration. It hurts all the refugees from crisis countries who behave themselves in an orderly and law-abiding manner." Deputy Governor Manfred Heimbuchner (FPO) had already made it clear Thursday that he is not prepared to keep these dangerous people here or feed them at taxpayers' expense.

After having decided to exercise his "right to silence" at the start of the hearing, Salah Abdeslam, the principal defendant in the trial of the November 13 attacks, finally emerges from his silence to give some snippets of answers to the court as to his (actions) during the evening of November 13, 2015.

"Mr Abdeslam, please stand," ordered the president of the special court, Jean-Louis Peries, in front of a full room. The plaintiffs and the press, indeed, came in numbers, Wednesday, March 30, to attend what some described as the most anticipated hearing of the trial. 

Behind the glass of his cubicle, the sole survivor of the November 13 commando, short hair, black polo shirt, and pants, to respond to the numerous questions plaguing the court since the start of the trial. But to everyone's surprise, Salah Abdeslam initially states his desire "to make use of my right to silence". Sounds of disappointment in the audience.

There are many gray areas concerning Salah Abselam's (actions) on the evening of November 13. Why did he abandon his explosive vest? Why did he abandon his car in the 18th arrondissement of Paris before heading to Montrouge, in the southern suburbs, after having dropped off the commando at the Stadium of France? What deadly project did he initially have?

"I insist," resumes Jean-Louis Peries. "So do I, Mr. President. I also insist: I don't wish to express myself today," retorts Salah Abdeslam, standing, hands crossed in front of him. "It is a right that I have, I don't have to justify myself on this," he responds calmly. "I have already made efforts, I kept my silence for 6 years, it was the position that I wanted to adopt for this trial, but I changed my mind, I said some things, I expressed myself in regard to the victims, but I can no longer express myself, I can't do it. I don't have to justify myself. I don't want to give my reasons so that nobody will again consider me a provocateur." 

"It is a dangerous position," noted the president. In the face of non-responses, we risk attributing what will not be favorable to you," he warned. The questions of the president collide one by one with the silence of the accused, seated on his bench, a black masque on his face, his look fixed straight ahead.

"A thought for the victims because it is an important day for them," continues Nicolas Le Bris, general counsel, who recalls that the plaintiffs were particularly waiting today for the answers that Salah Abdeslam had promised. Then the public minister asserts that the accused took "pleasure" in maintaining his silence. And to conclude: "This silence that he, nevertheless, brings to the hearing is nothing more than the confirmation that cowardice is the trademark of terrorists. You could have brought your answers after your pseudo-buzz. You don't have one ounce of courage, it is really cowardice in its rawest form." 

Faced with the insistence of Attorney Josserand Schmidt, civil party attorney, who calmly asks him several series of questions, Salah Abdeslam ends by taking his microphone to justify his silence. "To express myself or maintain silence, it serves nothing at all. I would have liked to hear this mother of 6 children who are dead because they lost their lives under the French bombings," states the accused, who notes the inequality of his trial because, according to him, the French State, who dropped bombs in Syria, is not in the defendant's dock. 

Responding to Attorney Josserand-Schmidt, the defendant then explains why he cried upon seeing his companion for the last time. "My fiancee, I loved her sincerely, and I wanted to marry her. If I cried, it's because, at that moment, she was talking about future plans, of children, of an apartment, and at that moment, I knew I was going to leave for Syria. That is what had been proposed to me. Because I had supported the Islamic State, and that I could have serious problems, and I had been told that the best for me was to go there. There, that's what I wanted to say."

Persevering, the lawyer then evokes the question of the explosive belt that never went off. Salah Abdeslam told his accomplices in Belgium that it was defective. "Was this a lie?" asks the lawyer. Shrugging his shoulders, he answers in a small voice: "That's it. I was ashamed, perhaps. Not perhaps," Salah Abdeslam stammers. "I was ashamed I didn't go all the way, I was afraid of (the reaction) of the others, I was 25 years old."

For Attorney Gerard Chemla, civil party attorney, Salah Abdeslam is "teasing" with his speeches in announcing that he will speak, raising the interest on the part of the press and the victims, "only to say nothing or little more than the Islamic State is right". He adds, "Salah Abdeslam has put the audience in a situation of hostage-taking: There have already been many victims caused by the Islamic State at the time of the attacks. Please, at the time of judgment, let us not be his victims."
