Angela Merkel Brings Shame to Germany

To those who have read this blog for a long time, they know that I have a deep affection for Germany, a country where I spent three years as a US serviceman in the 1960s. It is also clear that in the past few years, I have developed a strong disapproval of Angela Merkel's immigration policies, which have put the safety of her own citizens at risk.

My time in Germany, spent just outside Nuremberg, led me to become an amateur scholar of all things related to Nazism and the Holocaust. That is a large reason why I devote much of this site to fighting anti-semitism. The memory of the Holocaust must be kept alive for the simple reason that it must never happen again. And it could happen again.

I sincerely believe that in most accounts, Germany has worked hard to become a decent country since the end of World War II. Their sense of guilt is part of the reason that Germans like Merkel feel they have to take the lead in admitting refugees no matter how shaky their claims may be.

Now it appears that Merkel has put a new stain on her country. According to reports, she has urged several European countries not to follow President Trump's lead in moving our Israel embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The symbolism of this is beyond troubling. If it came from any other country, it would be bad enough. But we are talking about Germany here. Since the end of World War II, West Germany (and now the reunified Germany) has had a special relationship with Israel for obvious reasons. That a German chancellor would act so proactively against Israel's interests cannot be overlooked.

UC Berkeley Has to Pay for Abridging Free Speech

UC Berkeley has learned the hard way there can be a price to pay for abridging free speech on campus. Now they are paying out $70,000 to Young America Foundation.

It is more subtle than a university refusing a student group to bring in a particular speaker. There are other ways a university can limit or eliminate free speech by certain speakers they don't like. They can charge outrageous security fees, for example, that they would not charge to other groups.

Several years ago, I attended an event at UC Irvine where David Horowitz appeared. Not only did the university switch his meeting room at the last minute to a more obscure part of the campus, none of the whiteboard markers had enough ink. Horowitz repeatedly laughed it off at the UCI administrators in the audience who were documenting his words on their laptops.

When Milo Yiannopoulos appeared at UCI not long ago, the event was placed in a room much too small to accomodate the hundreds of people (including myself) who were trying to get in-and whose names were on the registration list.

I salute the YAF for holding UCB's feet to the fire. These institutions all have a ready made statement they release to the media when these things happen to the effect that they are "100 committed to the principles of free speech, inclusions, etc etc etc". It is a joke. When students and assorted riff-raff rioted at UC Berkeley a few years ago forcing a last minute cancellation to Yiannopoulos's appearance, the university all but put their seal of approval on the assaults and destruction of property as campus police stood around like potted plants. Other universities, like UCI, seem to be allowing disruptions to continue for a set period of time before gently ushering the protesters out with no consequences.

Left to their own devices and with the public not paying attention, universities will continue to limit conservative speech and indoctrinate our youth. They need to be countered, and, when appropriate, sued.

AMCHA Letter to 250 Universities

My friends at the Amcha Initiative and 100 other groups have sent a letter to 250 heads of colleges and universities asking them to reject the numerous boycotts directed at Israel.

I am certainly in agreement with the letter. These boycotts are a thinly-disguised effort to destroy the Jewish state of Israel, first and foremost because it is a Jewish state located in a sea of surrounding Muslim states. To their credit, almost every university has rejected faculty and student resolutions and other calls for boycotting Israel, its products and its academics.

In addition, I would like to see letters directed to virtually every institution of higher learning in the country asking their administrators to actively and pro-actively stand up to all forms of anti-semitism on their campuses. It is not just criticism of Israel and Zionism; more and more campuses are seeing swastikas appear on their walls. Jewish students are being bullied and intimidated by pro-Palestinian forces on campus. Hate speech is taking over.  We are drifting back to a dark time in world history, and this drift must be stopped.

Bah Humbug Becomes Allahu Akhbar at German Christmas Market

One of the most charming experiences in Germany is visiting their numerous Christmas markets. I was fortunate having been stationed with the US Army just outside Nuremberg to have experienced the country's number one ranked Christmas market.

Unfortunately, not all foreigners who go to Germany are so enchanted. Some are downright offended. Thanks to Angela Merkel's misguided zeal to re-populate her country with a million or so Muslims, Germans have to pay the price. In the below incident, a Muslim guy made his statement by waving a hatchet at people and shouting, "Allahu Akhbar".

Of course, nobody was killed in the above incident, thank God. In other incidents, people have been killed or raped by these marauders, who have no respect of regard for the customs and traditions of the country they have chosen to settle in..

The (Avoidable) Death Toll Rises in Germany

The body count in Germany has risen yet again by one. Like so many other cases, the scenario is familiar. A 17-year-old German girl disappears and is later found murdered at a refugee shelter. A young man from Kenya is in custody.

How does Angela Merkel look the parents of these murdered young girls in the eye and explain to them why her immigration and refugee policy is good for Germany or Europe? 

From Paris to Sacramento

If you don't pay attention to foreign affairs, you may not be aware that for the past several days, there have been riots in Paris-serious riots. The cause? France's ultra liberal president, Emmanuel Macron, has put in place a 16% diesel fuel tax hike, and the everyday people who have to pay for it are not happy. Hence, we now have the "yellow vest" riots named after the vests donned by the rioters. Frankly, it looks like the revolt of the school crossing guards.

I don't support riots, and I am not trying to defend these riots, but I hope our political leaders in Sacramento (the California state capital) are watching the events unfold in France. California has for years paid excessive fuel prices. The gas taxes we pay ostensibly for road improvement, have gone for other liberal purposes. We also pay extra for a costly blend that is supposed to cut down on air pollution.

Just last month, voters went to the polls to vote on Proposition 6, which would have repealed the last gas tax hike. The measure failed, largely because the Democrats, who rule the governor's house, the state assembly and the state senate and led by Attorney General Javier Becerra, deliberately mislabeled the measure. It said nothing about the gas tax, only that without funding, all sorts of terrible and dangerous things would happen to our highways. Now, with their veto-proof majorities, the Democrats can pass any tax they want without one single Republican vote.

Sacramento should look long and hard at what is happening in France. There is a limit-or should be- to how much government can squeeze out of its citizens.

What that means now is that even a trip to the supermarket with your kids is dangerous. In this latest happening in Angela's Wonderland, one migrant shot another migrant to death as terrified shoppers ran in terror.

Remembering President George HW Bush

I had the privilege of actually seeing then President George H.W. Bush give a speech. It was back in the 90s when I was serving my final tour of duty with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Office of Training. At the time, DEA’s training division was co-located in the FBI Academy at Quantico, Virginia. That was in anticipation of plans to eventually merge the two agencies, which never occurred.

On this occasion, and I don’t recall the exact year, President Bush was scheduled to give the address at the graduation of the FBI’s basic agent class. A few DEA personnel managed to get invitations, and my supervisor gave me his pass. I recall that due to security requirements, we had to be in our seats 90 minutes before the President arrived.

To be honest, I don’t even recall what President Bush said other than making joking references to the academy’s “Yellow Brick Road”, its iconic jogging trail, and Hogan’s Alley, its mock town set up for practical exercises in surveillance, raids and arrests. What he said doesn’t matter. What matters is the opportunity to see hear a sitting president speak live. Especially one so deserving of respect.

Few US presidents have had a resume as impressive as Bush, who died Friday at 94. At the age of 20, he was shot down in the Pacific during World War 2 and had to be plucked out of the water, a film of which still survives. Prior to becoming president, he served in Congress, as CIA director, US ambassador to the UN and China, and, of course, as vice president under Ronald Reagan.

As president, Bush presided over the breakup of the Soviet Union, a process he handled wisely, refusing to gloat and further humiliate our Soviet adversaries. He will be primarily remembered for his response to the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, an invasion he famously stated, “will not stand”. He masterfully put together a coalition of nations-including Arab nations- to drive Saddam Hussein’s forces out of Kuwait.

By all accounts, Bush was a decent man, a gentleman, and a class act. Some may quibble as to whether he was as conservative as Reagan, but I think in the end, history will treat George H.W. Bush very kindly-as it will his son who followed him into the White House. Our nation should be thankful for the service of George H.W. Bush. 

Geert Wilders Urges Netherlands to Accept Asia Bibi

As Pakistanis continue to howl for the death of a Christian woman named Asia Bibi, we are still waiting for a Western country to give her asylum. Dutch politician Geert Wilders is urging his feckless government to step up and offer her asylum. I will be surprised if they do.

As all this is playing out, the UK has refused asylum so as not to offend its howling Muslim population. Meanwhile, mobs are reportedly going  door to door in an effort to find Bibi and lynch her. If, God forbid, that comes to pass, it will not only be a shame on Pakistan, but a shame on the entire Western world as well.

University of Michigan Professor Juan Cole Goes Ballistic Over CNN Firing of Marc Lamont Hill

University of Michigan professor Juan Cole has written a lot of silly stuff in his opposition to Israel and promotion of anything and everything Islamic. The below piece, in which he goes positively ballistic over the CNN firing of Marc Lamont Hill, was written in Cole's blog, Informed Comment. Hill was fired this week as a CNN commentator after his UN speech in which he defended Palestinian violence.

Cole shows his shotgun intellectual approach as he condemns Israel for the "jackboot" way it allegedly treats Palestinians. He also attacks former President George W Bush for deposing poor little Saddam Hussein. It was all about white supremacy over the Iraqis, you know. He links American supporters of Israel to hatred of "filthy Arabs" in general. To Cole, people who support Israel in America are "bigots". Cole even invokes the Vietnam war,  Rambo, and a reference to the "white man's burden". I'm frankly surprised he didn't throw in a few comments about the heroic Honduran migrants. This article reads like an op-ed by some dopey leftist student in a university campus newspaper.

But among all the overblown, histrionic language, Cole falls short on a couple of points that really stand out (aside from calling Hill "a  brave voice for freedom and human rights in our time", which is laughable in itself).

We all know that favorite Palestinian phrase that Palestine, "will be free from the river to the sea". It was quoted and invoked by Hill in his speech. It refers to the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, which happen to form the eastern and western borders of Israel respectively. To use that phrase essentially means that there should be one Palestinian  nation with no more Israel.  For several years, that has been clear.

But now Mr Cole has a new take on that. Pay attention, Dear Reader because this is a groundbreaking discovery on Cole's part. In his article, he shows a map of present-day Israel showing the West Bank and Gaza. Cole actually tries to make the argument that what Mr Hill really meant was that  the West Bank (which borders on the Jordan River) and Gaza (which borders on the Mediterranean) would be "free". Everything else that is present-day Israel would be left alone. That, according to Cole's implication, is what Mr Hill really meant. That's what all those little peace-loving rascals from Students for Justice in Palestine really mean when they chant this phrase.

If that isn't ridiculous enough, Cole conveniently skips over another part of Hill's speech that even CNN couldn't live with. Hill, while paying lip service to the principle of non-violence, essentially excused the long history of violent-terrorist acts of violence committed by Palestinian terrorists against innocent civilians, both Israelis and non-Israelis in the name of their cause.  He referred to it as "resistance".

This of course includes decades upon decades of horrific acts of violence by Palestinians including the airplane skyjackings of the 1960s, the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre of the entire Israeli team, the Achille Lauro attack in 1985, when an elderly Jewish American man, Leon Klinghoffer, was shot  in his wheelchair and thrown overboard by Palestinian "freedom fighters". It includes suicide bombings, bus bombings, kidnappings, and the more recent knife attacks and  car attacks against innocent Israeli civilians including the horrific 2011 massacre of the Fogel family on the West Bank, which included the slaughter of children and the murder of a month-old infant in its crib. In response to the latter case, Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza danced in the streets and passed out candy in celebration-as they did on 9-11. I could list so many more examples of the "resistance" of the heroic Palestinian people, but that would require a book. Yer in Cole's language, he refers to it as, "Palestinian activism". Cole also says:

"That same dishonest columnist at The Forward managed to reconfigure Hill’s activism as violence. The fact is that international law recognizes the right of occupied peoples to mount even violent resistance to occupation militaries. But that isn’t what Hill was calling for. And then, any violence is then twisted around as violence toward civilians. And there you have it. Terrorism."

To that, I will stand on my previous paragraph outlining decades of Palestinian terrorism against innocent civilians-both Israeli and non-Israeli and both inside Israel and in other countries. That is not what I call legitimate resistance. 

As for Mr Hill, he was an embarrassment to CNN in the first place. Not only is he a friend and defender of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, who is a vicious anti-semite, Hill, in the same UN speech invoked the false narrative of Ferguson, Missouri and the police shooting of Michael Brown, a thug who attacked a cop and was trying to take his gun away from him. Without Mr Hill, CNN is now (only slightly) a better place today.

The Marrakesh Pact

In the below two videos (parts 1 and 2), Corinna Miazga, a representative of Germany's Alternatif fuer Deutschland party explains what the so-called Marrakesh Pact means for Germany and Europe. While Germany and many Western European nations are signing on to this agreement to facilitate even more migration into Europe by people from the Middle East and Africa, the US will not, as well as most Eastern European nations and Italy.

We should be grateful to President Trump for not allowing the US to be sucked into this pact, which will lesson our safety and sovereignty. Likewise, Italians are thanking the Italian government and in particular, Matteo Salvini, the interior minister, for standing up to this misguided idea. It is also ironic that the Eastern European nations, only recently freed from the shackles of communism and domination by the old Soviet Union, are leading the way in common sense.

I feel bad for Germany, a country I care about, for allowing a misguided leader like Angela Merkel to drag it down into a new dark age, different from the Hitlerian version, to be sure, but a dark age nonetheless.
