The Public Prosecutor in Rotterdam has demanded a prison sentence of 8 years against Abdusamad A., a 31-year-old man from Tajikistan, for recruiting members for ISIS cells in various countries, including the Netherlands, with a view to preparing for attacks. The prosecutor placed him in the context of ISKP, the Afghan branch of the Islamic State. The man denies involvement and declared before the judge that he has nothing to do with ISIS. He was arrested in Eindhoven in July 2023 after a report from the AIVD*. His wife, who was arrested with him, was previously acquitted. The couple is since divorced and has remained in the Netherlands since 2022.
During an undercover operation, Abdusamad A. reportedly told an informant he belonged to ISIS, something that he downplayed in court as an attempt to make an impression due to the feelings of the other (person). The prosecutor states that in 2016, he tried to travel to Syria to join ISIS, but was then arrested in Turkey and sent to Ukraine, where, according to the prosecutor, he was part of an ISIS cell. The defense emphasized that the investigation brought forth little convincing evidence to prosecute him for participating in a terrorist organization.
