Amsterdam (ANP): On Thursday, Pegida leader Edwin Wagensveld set fire to a Koran in the center of Amsterdam. He did so in front of the entrance to the Stopera, seen by an ANP reporter.
Wagensveld had announced the Islamophobic action on the Amstel (river) beforehand. Before Wagensveld burned the Koran in front of the Stopera, he said that his right to demonstrate was not guaranteed. The square in front of the Stopera was cordoned off by the police, who, among other things, were present with horses.
On Thursday afternoon, the police judge in Arnhem sentenced Wagensveld to 20 hours of community service and a one-week jail suspended sentence in another case. The judge found Wagensveld guilty of insulting the Islamic community in the Netherlands, insulting the Arnhem mayor, Ahmed Marcouch, and violating a ban on (him) entering Arnhem.
