Today, Sweden experienced what is being called the worst school mass shooting in its history. It occurred in the town of Örebro at the Risbergska School which is primarily for adult learners and includes Swedish classes for immigrants. Eleven people were shot to death including the shooter, who reportedly committed suicide. He is described as a 35-year-old loner with no criminal record. Police do not yet have a motive, but they do not believe it was connected to any ideology. One of the victims is reportedly a 25-year-old member of the Bosnian Islamic community who was a student at the school.
While the identity of the shooter is not yet known, this appears either to be gang-related or an attack against Muslims reminiscent of what occurred in Christchurch, New Zealand a few years ago. The police say the shooter has no known gang affiliations, and given his age, I am leaning toward the latter explanation.
Whatever the circumstances and motivation are, the act is to be condemned. The murder of innocents can never be condoned. One thing is clear: Sweden is descending into deadly chaos, and it is only going to get worse until the Swedish government takes decisive action.
