SJP at UCI Sanctioned for Two Years

"Next time, we'll give 'em slaps on both wrists."

As a result of their disruption of a pro-Israel event on May 10 at UC Irvine, the UCI chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine has been placed on a probationary status for two years.

"As a result, SJP was sanctioned with disciplinary probation for two academic years, ending June 16, 2019.  During this time, the organization must abide by UCI’s standards of conduct, meet with the Dean of Students six times per year to discuss free speech issues, and consult with a representative of the dean’s office before hosting or co-hosting any campus event.  Any further violations of university policy may result in suspension or a revocation of the organization’s status."

What we don't know due to privacy regulations is what action was taken against individual participants in the disruption.

As far as SJP is concerned, this is a slap on the wrist. Remember that in May 2016, SJP led a group of students in disrupting another pro-Israel vent on campus. For that they received a warning letter.

And of course SJP is appealing the decision, as the UCI press release goes on to state. The Dean of Students or his designee can decide to affirm, reverse or modify. We can assume that SJP's lawyers (maybe Palestine Legal or others) will be threatening legal action and applying strong pressure to reverse or modify down to a few months. Our side must keep on insisting that the sentence is already a mere slap on the wrist and should not be further watered down.
