Making Sense of the Munich Attack

Hat tip Gates of Vienna

At this point it appears that there was one shooter in the Munich attack that has left 10 dead including the shooter who is believed to have killed himself. The shooter is tentatively identified as an 18 (or 19)-year old man who dual Iranian and German citizenship. Gates of Vienna has a video with a verbal exchange between the shooter and at least one other person.

There have been conflicting reports about what the shooter is reported to have said. Hours earlier, he was reported to have made reference to "Scheiss (shit) foreigners", insulted Turks ( a large minority in Germany), and stated that he was a German. On the other hand, a Muslim female bystander stated emphatically that he said, "Allahu Akhbar" (God is great.).

Frankfurter Allgemeine states that the man was 18-years old of Iranian origin, and that the motive is unclear. They also state that the shooter was wounded by police before killing himself.

I am speculating here, but I am guessing that the shooter had one of two possible motives. Obviously, it is necessary to determine if he was a Muslim. Since he apparently had German citizenship, there may have been a resentment over not being treated as a full German within society. Or it may just be another case of jihad. At any rate, it appears that this was not the act of some neo-Nazi.
