Vanderbilt Chancellor: Another Wimp

Hat tip Vanderbilt Hustler

Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos
Nicholas Zeppos-Wimp

"I have heard and appreciate the serious concerns of our many students and alumni who have signed an online petition calling for the suspension of Carol Swain, professor of political science and professor of law.  Professor Swain’s opinions are her own.  They do not reflect the opinions of the university in any way.  They are not my opinions, the opinions of the provost, or the opinions of university leadership."

This morning, I learned that Vanderbilt professor Carol Swain, who is a black conservative, is under attack by the the poor little darlings at her school. They have gathered a petition demanding she be suspended.

Now here comes Vanderbilt Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos with  a statement-not defending Swain-not telling the students to stuff it- but saying that Swain does not speak for the university.

Make no mistake: The students are attacking Swain because she is a black conservative and probably because she occasionally appears on Fox News as well. This is pure fascism on campus. Zeppos could have made a clear statement in defense of Swain's First Amendment rights. Instead, he chose to curry favor with the spoiled little revolutionaries.

Are there any university administrators who have a pair of balls in the country? What is this guy afraid of-that his football team will go on strike?

Swain, on the other hand, is not lacking in courage. She has responded to the petition, and she is not impressed with Zeppos' statement.

Maybe this country would be better off if our universities actually closed down for a year or two to take stock of themselves. Maybe that would give students a chance to savor the real world out there where there are no "safe spaces" to protect one from the hard facts of life. Maybe our university administrators and professors (with the notable exception of people like Swain) could use the time to find meaningful employment.
