The French Nightmare Ends-For Now
At this moment, the two killers of the Charlie Hebdo attack are confirmed dead. At the same time, one of their followers, who is believed to have killed a French policewoman yesterday, has been killed in siege at a Jewish grocery in Paris. At least four innocent people were killed. Anyone who wonders whether the attacker chose a Jewish grocery store by design or coincidence is a fool.
Meanwhile, some sort of hostage incident is ongoing in Southern France.
It seems that the French police and intelligence services acted with great ability and courage. They are to be congratulated.
However, this is just the beginning. Sadly, there will be more attacks in France, Europe and other parts of the West including the US. We are in this for the long haul.
It is now up to the leaders of European countries to listen to their people. If they don't, they will not be in office very long. In the meantime, we must all brace ourselves for more, and that means in the US that we are going to have to tolerate less privacy. If it takes the NSA to wiretap half the country, so be it. The NYPD and other police departments must be allowed to resume their intelligence collecting activities within the Muslim communities.
We await the next horrific attack.
