UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks has issued a statement asking for civility.

I don't know if I read all that into the statement as the above article does. Reading between the lines, I see this as a plea by Dirks to the loud and always-obnoxious pro-Palestinian lobby on campus (of which Professor Hatem Bazian is the leader). In other words, stop insulting and intimidating the Jewish students.
Dirks should be demanding civility and telling his troublemakers, both students and faculty, that if they want to remain at UCB, they will knock off the hate speech and intimidation.
Instead we get this drivel.
