It is a sad day for law enforcement in Los Angeles. The US Attorney's Office in LA and the FBI have announced that 18 present and former LA County Sheriff's Deputies have been indicted as a result into a federal investigation into corruption allegations at the LA County Jail over several years.

The jail is run by LA County Sheriff's deputies, and traditionally, once recruits graduated from the academy, they spent their first year at the jail.
When I was a DEA agent working in LA, it was the LA County Jail where we booked our prisoners into until we had them arraigned and turned over to the US Marshal. While awaiting trial, if they were unable to make bail, they sat in the jail until trial.
As to the allegations, I have no inside or personal knowledge, and my personal experience ended in 1982 when I left LA for Italy. I can say that it was a rough place-including the Sybil Brand women's facility
As for Sheriff Lee Baca, I hope this will be enough to keep him from being re-elected by the voters in the coming election.
