Scott Walker was elected with 52% of the vote in a record low voter turnout. He's entitled to his four years. He's going to get to do some stuff that Tom Barrett wouldn't have done, and refrain from some stuff that Tom Barrett would have done.
Sensible politicians recognize that winning with 52 percent of the vote means about 48 percent of your fellow citizens didn't support you. It keeps people in office a bit humble, and they don't over-reach in terms of what they think they can accomplish.
For example, Barack Obama won 53% of the popular vote, and those who did not vote for him have been demanding attention to the fact that they are 47% of the population, and are not going to roll over and play dead, ever since. Well, they don't have to, and their opinions and desires ARE part of the calculus that President Obama has to take into consideration.
Scott Walker doesn't understand that at all. He has no sense of humility. He is an overgrown spoiled brat and a snake oil salesman. He always has been. Nothing any protest can do will remove him from office, but any man with a bit more sense of proportion would be reminded that he was elected governor of Wisconsin for four years, not king of the world (or imperatur) for life.
Updates on this point:
A recent poll shows that if the election were re-run today, a majority would have voted for Tom Barrett over Scott Walker. A poll is not an election, but it does suggest (as many people in Wisconsin believe) that Walker has over-reached himself.
The acid test will be the next step: recalling several Republican legislators. Ironically, a recall election was Walker's big chance to slip in as Milwaukee County executive.
