I guess seeing Janet Re....I mean Napolitano together with Eric Holder at yesterday's press conference means that they now realize that the Times Square incident was REALLY AN ACT OF TERRORISM!! In the case of Holder, I cut him some slack; after all, he's been preoccupied with trying to determine if Arizona's new immigration law passes constitutional muster (even though it's a mirror image of the federal law). He might also want to look up that 1996 order that President Clinton signed authorizing state and local agencies to assist the feds. Must have gotten lost in the shuffle of all those pardons you were helping Clinton out with, eh Eric?
Speaking of which, it must be a real disappointment to the mainstream media and the mad hatters at MSNBC that our culprit was an Islamic terrorist and not some tea partier angry because we have a black president. Turns out this guy hated....George W. Bush!
Nevertheless, old Edward R Olbermann went off on another "commentary" read tirade last night on "Meltdown" as he attacked John McCain's character for suggesting that authorities should have treated him as a terrorist and not Mirandized him so quickly-you know, get any info that might disclose an imminent attack. (I understand there is such a provision for getting such information prior to a Miranda warning being given, which was apparently the case here.)
So what is Olbermann's beef?

Final thought on Olbermann. When he dons a uniform and goes to fight for his country, does a few years as a POW, then he can attack John McCain the man. I too have differences with John McCain, the politician, but he has proven himself to be a REAL AMERICAN. Unlike a couple of other people I could mention.

Hell, we can drink beer with the Germans on the anniversaries of all the wars when they invaded France. There won't be enough days to work. My point is; what is there to celebrate about defeating the French and executing some foo-foo Austrian Archduke named Max?
Which leads to my next point; never, never bring in an Austrian to run anything in your country. Examples?

So, we can throw out anybody's Constitutional rights so long as they're trying to do us harm then, right? Why even bother with a Constitution then?
We have the rule of law here, and everybody has rights - even homegrown terrorists. As for your "let him stay at your home" thing, that's just idiotic. 'Cause yeah, giving the guy his Constitutional rights means that he's going to be out on the streets on bail. That's why Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, BTK, etcetera all got out on the streets. Give me a break. You either support the Constitution or you don't.

I'm sorry, but this kind of horse manure is completely contrary to what this country is all about. Do people in the military deserve respect? Yes. But what you're suggesting is beyond respect - it goes all the way up to reverence. It's as though you're worshiping the military when you put these people above and beyond criticism. (Do you know who else encouraged a near-worship of the military? I'll give you a hint. His name rhymes with Shmadolf Shmitler.)
And I'm also so sick to death of this whole "real American" talk. Who the hell are you to decide what a "real" American is? In my book, all sorts of people, from redneck jingoist yahoos to Hare Krishna tambourine players are all just as American as anybody else. That's the beauty of this country. You get to love it; you get to hate it, and you get to have all sorts of nuanced opinions in between.
If anything is "un-American" it's this fascist attitude of deciding who gets to be a "real" American and who doesn't.

I thought I put the Miranda thing in some sort of perspective-much more than Edw R Olbermann did in his rant against McCain-who I don't worship, especially as a politician-which I clearly stated, but 10 Olbermanns couldn't make one McCain.
So yes, we at some point have to give the bum his Miranda rights and bring him to Federal court. I get it. But is it ok with you if the cops first ask him if any other bombs are about the go off before he gets the warning?
Did you actually see Olbermann's rant? He sounded like he was the guy's defense attorney.
As for real Americans-sorry, but I have a problem with jihadists who come here, become American citizens not because they love this country, rather because they want to infiltrate it and attack it. And no, I'm not applying that tag to all Muslims in America.

I can tell the difference between Time and Newsweek. I let my subscription to Newsweek lapse, and switched to Time, because Newsweek was much more faddish, and made the assumption that we all agree on things most of us don't agree on. One of the last straws was a cover after Lawrence v. Texas ruling on right to privacy grounds, that police shouldn't be running into adult's private homes to arrest them for the characteristics of their sexual partner. Newsweek's headline was Is Gay Marriage Next?, a bit of constitutional misinformation which became a kind of self-fulfilling mislocation. Yeah, organized gay groups want both, but gay marriage is an "equal protection of the laws" issue, and as such distinguishable on any grounds other than "I want what I want and I want it now -- isn't it in the constitution that I can have it?" Every member of the Supreme Court except Sandra Day O'Connor was on record that there is no viable equal protection claim.
The point of Miranda rights is not "what rights should a known terrorist who just tried to blow up Times Square receive," but "what rights should any and every American citizen just arrested by the police receive," since we all know that arrested individuals may be (a) innocent, (b) guilty of something, but not what the police are thinking of, (c) guilty as sin of exactly what the police are thinking of. The police can't be trusted to make snap judgements as to when and how to make exceptions. They might have been right this time, but they will be wrong tomorrow. John McCain, whatever his military service, is wrong to have asked such a question -- if he doesn't understand why, what exactly was he doing that time in a POW camp to defend?
I was born the day the Viet Minh opened their first artillery salvo on Dien Bien Phu, and while I wasn't aware of the event at the time (nor was my mother, being otherwise preoccupied), I took some pride in this coincidence after I realized what fools our leaders were to drag the U.S. in where the French rightly feared to tread anymore. We shouldn't have let the French go back after WW II at all, and we could have stopped them. But if you really want to put down the French, don't forget that we wouldn't have won our independence without their help, and we devoted a good deal of jingoism to going to rescue the French imperialist warmongers from the German imperialist warmongers, mostly because J.P. Morgan had a lot of loans out, and Woodrow "He Kept Us Out of War" Wilson thought J.P. was "too big to fail."
My jokes about the French are all in good fun. I have no axe against them personally. I have been to France many times (I speak French), and have always been treated well.
As to Miranda, there was no such exception to Miranda when I retirede and I don';t know all the details about this imminent terror exemption. While in DEA, I always Mirandized if there was any question even if the person wasn't yet arrested or charged.
