The Cubs are not the only thing that is wrong in Chicago. On the South Side, murders are skyrocketing, and Rahm Emanuel has no clue what to do about it. Meanwhile, the teachers' union is out on strike. The average teacher in Chicago makes almost $75,000 a year, but they need a 60% raise and are resisting evaluations that might-just might- get rid of the deadwood.
It's all for the children, you know.

Someone else who has no idea what to do-or say- is the White House, where Emanuel served as Obama's chief of staff. Who do they back- Rahm or the union? That's a sticky wicket. Consequently, the White House won't take a stand on either side. But there is good news for Rahm: Paul Ryan is in his corner.

To me, certain professions have no business striking. That includes law enforcement, firemen, air traffic controllers and teachers. But how ironic is it that teachers unions are such an impediment to quality education even though most teachers are dedicated and important people who should make decent money.
But on a larger level, the situation in Chicago should serve as a reminder of the bankruptcy of Democratic political control of the major cities in the US. From Washington to Los Angeles to New Orleans to Chicago to Detroit to Philadelphia to San Francisco and beyond, cities are under the control of Democratic machines presiding over rampant crime, bad roads, failing schools and corruption. Yet, they are never held to account by their constituencies who keep voting them back into office. The public service unions are happy, and I guess that is all that matters.
But there is good news: The White Sox are in first place.
