The Stupidity of the Presbyterian Church USA

In case you have not heard, the Presbyterian Church USA, which has already "distinguished" itself by engaging in all sorts of anti-Israel efforts, has passed a measure divesting itself from certain corporations that do business with Israel, such as Caterpillar and Motorola.

So let's put this in perspective. At a time when the Christian minorities in most of Israeli's Arab neighbor-countries are fleeing for their lives, the Presbyterian Church USA singles out Israel, the only country in the Middle East where Christians can live in peace and freedom to worship.

You talk about dumb. You talk about anti-Semitism.

The Presbyterian Church has published a propaganda booklet, “Zionism Unsettled,” with a little help from their Muslim friends. I purchased a copy, and I was really disturbed by their selective memory and re-writing of history. Here are just a few “sound bites”:

• Only Israeli Jews are full citizens of that land, while 5 million Palestinians live in a state of subjugation or exile and 1.2 million Palestinian Arabs live in Israel as second-class citizens.

Actually, Arab Israelis have full citizenship rights, and some are elected members of the Knesset.

• Zionism was (and remains) not just about the colonization of Palestinian land, but also about colonizing minds – Jewish, Arab, European, American.

Actually, the “disputed territories” remain disputed because the Palestinians will not make peace with Israel. The Palestinians have actually rejected over 30 peace offers with Israel. The HAMAS Covenant of 1988 says, “There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors.” Furthermore, Israel actually gave back Sinai to Egypt and carved out Gaza exclusively for the Palestinians. (All Jews were expelled by the Palestinians.)

• Christian anti-Semitism was a major factor in the rise of Jewish Zionism.

There is very little “Christian” involvement in the dispute between Israel and Palestine. The HAMAS covenant is the document that injects religion into the dispute: “It is necessary to instill in the minds of the Moslem generations that the Palestinian problem is a religious problem, and should be dealt with on this basis. (The Muslim religious sites referred to are all in Jerusalem). . HAMAS believes that the land of Palestine is an Islamic Waqf (a trust from Allah) consecrated for future Moslem generations until Judgment Day. It, or any part of it (i.e., Jerusalem), should not be squandered: it, or any part of it (i.e. Jerusalem), should not be given up.”

• The Palestinian story is one of suffering . . . at the hands of the Zionists who planned, organized and implemented systematic ethnic cleansing that resulted in the exodus of over half of the Palestinian population in 1947-48 and prevented those refugees’ return to their homes after the end of the war. . .They slaughtered untold numbers of Palestinian men, women, and children. They drove over 750,000 refugees from their homes and land.

Actually, the Arab nations surrounding Israel attacked Israel in 1947 to start the Arab-Israeli war. The Arabs living there were ordered by the Arab nations to leave the area or else they would be killed in the fighting as collaborators with the Jews.

• What . . is the connection between these ancient texts (Psalm 137:9 and Joshua 6) and the ongoing killing of Palestinian and other Arab children?

This the height of propaganda. Any “children” killed by Israel were actually militant teenagers launching attacks on Israeli soldiers.

• Racism is the cornerstone of the Zionist project. . . Zionism has created a system of domination and subservience.

Of course, there is not mention of the 800,000 Jews who were summarily expelled from Arab countries after the Arab-Israeli war. There is also no mention of the fact that all Jews were expelled from Gaza after it was turned over to the Palestinians. If Palestinians have suffered since 1947 it is because of their refusal to recognize Israel as a sovereign state and the refusal of surrounding Arab nations to absorb Palestinian refugees. For 65 years they have been held in refugee camps in Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and elsewhere in the Middle East. They are, indeed, second class citizens in those countries – unable to vote or get work permits.

I could go on, but readers get the idea. I think this document will draw a lot of criticism against the Presbyterian Church. Presbyterians should voice your opposition to such a biased piece of propaganda.

Thanks, Chris for shedding light on the subject.

More like smoke and mirrors... Christian anti-semitism had A LOT to do with the rise of Zionism.
