All the "Right Statements" Coming Out of Egypt

State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland

If you think White House press spokespersons are bad, you should watch the State Department ones in action. (Isn't that where Jay Carney broke his teeth?)

Introducing Victoria Nuland. In trying to figure out what the Hell is going on in Egypt in order to answer a reporter's question, Nuland had this to say yesterday about in-coming Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi.

QUESTION: You mentioned respect for women for – of the rights of women, of minorities, but what are the signs you’re getting so far from President-elect Morsi both before the election and since?

MS. NULAND: Well, he’s been saying a lot of the right things both privately, and then you saw him say many of the right things publicly on Sunday. So now he – as he gets inaugurated and begins taking up his duties, he needs to turn those pledges into action, obviously.

You mean like calling Israelis vampires and killers?

Or this? (Hat tip Christian Post)

"According to the Egyptian website, El Bashayer, Morsi was asked by a journalist about Egyptian Christians who were supporting his opposition. This conversation took place at his party's headquarters, suggesting that he thought he could speak frankly. Here is his reported reply: "They need to know that conquest is coming, that Egypt will be Islamic, and that they must pay jizra or emigrate." (Jizra is the tax the Prophet Muhammad required non-Muslims to pay in lands conquered by Islam.) At his first political rally, Morsi reportedly chanted the Brotherhood's slogan, "The Qur'an is our constitution."

Wake up, Washington! It's the Muslim Brotherhood that is taking over.

Speaking of the Muslim Brotherhood, here's a memorable statement from their spiritual leader, Yusuf al Qaradawi, who had to leave Egypt and go into exile under the previous regime. He's obviously back in favor now. If you search this site, you can find some great not-so-oldies of him talking about dying in battle against the Infidels and calling the Holocaust God's punishment on the Jews. Below, he weighs in on the subject of female masturbation. (Hat tip MEMRI-TV)

Now I should point out in the interest of fairness that the above statement was made in Qatar in 2006. At the risk of digressing, I am reminded of the statement made to me a few months ago at the Islamic Center of Orange County by LAPD Chief Michael Downing of the terrorist intelligence squad, when I told him that the mosque and its director, Imam Muzammil Siddiqi, had played host to the Blind Sheikh, Omar Abdel Rahman, in 1992 (before Rahman was sent to prison for plotting to blow up New York City), and that Siddiqi had reportedly translated in real time a barn burner of a sermon by Rahman that said something to the effect that non-violent jihad was useless. And Downing's response to me?

"Well, you know, Gary, some people change over time."

So, in the spirit of what Chief Downing told me, let's assume that Qaradawi's views on female masturbation have changed over time.
