Did Trump Really Slur (Democrat) Jews?

This week, President Trump, as he regularly does, spoke out on an issue in a manner that his enemies are using to accuse him of bigotry. In the midst of the ugly controversy over Democrat members of the US House of Representatives, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib’s aborted effort to visit Israel and stir up trouble, Trump questioned why American Jews would vote for the Democrat party and threw in the “loyalty” word, which Jews worldwide consider an anti-Semitic slur accusing Jews of having less than full loyalty to the nation in which they reside. For several decades, American Jews have suffered from the accusation that they hold more loyalty to Israel than they do to America.

As a supporter of Trump (and a Gentile), I have to admit that he is not very articulate, and he has a habit of expressing his views in a manner that invites attack. Having said that, I think the accusation against Trump of being an anti-Semite is inaccurrate and unfair. It is not only the fact that Trump has shown himself to be the most pro-Israel president since Harry Truman. He has demonstrated that when it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, his sympathies lie with Israel. In addition, he has spoken out forcefully against Jew hatred-the type of Jew hatred that has been exhibited repeatedly by Omar and Tlaib. The type of Jew hatred that has been ignored by the Democrat party, which has refused to condemn these two provocateurs.

But the accusation that Trump used the word, “disloyalty” in a manner that suggests anti-Semitism must be addressed because in his typically in artful way, he did come close to what many Jews consider anti-Semitic verbiage; that is accusing (American) Jews of being disloyal.

But disloyal to what?

The slur that Jews worldwide object to is that they owe more loyalty to Israel than to the country in which they reside and hold citizenship-in this case, the United States. Even the accusation of “dual loyalty” is a slur and is included in the definition of anti-Semitism by the US State Department. But however in artful Trump’s statement may have been, that is not what he said or suggested. What Trump meant was that liberal American Jews who voted Democrat were being disloyal to Jews in general as well as Israel. That point can be argued till the cows come home, but it is not anti-Semitic because it shows that Trump is on the side of Israel and is sympathetic to Jews in general. This is a point that has been very effectively pointed out by Los Angeles-based Jewish writer and pundit, Eric Golub, a supporter of Israel and Trump.

“Trump accused liberal Jews of being disloyal to their religion, not their country. That is a major distinction.”

Let me go further.

Over a decade ago, I became an activist opposing anti-Semitism, which I observed on the campus of the University of California at Irvine, where I was employed as a part-time teacher from 1998-2016. I learned quickly that the problem of anti-Semitism was being stirred almost exclusively by the pro-Palestinian movement that sought to delegitimize Israel. As I began to speak out, I learned that some Jews were not only ambivalent toward Israel, but actively sided against the Jewish state taking the Palestinian side. Some of these folks were Jewish students, professors, and activists. Others were so-called Jewish leaders of such organizations such as the Jewish Federation of Orange County and the Anti-Defamation League, people who claimed to be pro-Israel, but who chose not to confront the anti-Semitism being promoted by pro-Palestinian and Muslim groups.

The Jewish community in America is fragmented when it comes to virtually every topic. In addition, it is fair and accurate to say that many American Jews have embraced liberal politics due to their own history of persecution and sympathy for the underdog. In some respects, in my view it has been misguided, but where I think it has really gone off the rails is the identity that the Jewish left has with the Palestinian cause. There is no denying that part of leftist ideology is embracing the Palestinian cause even when its anti-Semitic underpinnings are exposed. As for American Jews putting their sympathy for Israel over their allegiance to the US, that is nonsense. My experience tells me that American Jews who support Israel are fiercely loyal to the US. Those on the left (Jew and non-Jew) who march in lock step with The Palestinians, on the other hand, have a tendency to trash the US as much as Israel. So who is “disloyal”?

What Trump is doing is similar to what he has done in other areas; he is bringing discussion on a critical topic to the forefront. It is time that American Jews really reexamine their traditional allegiance to the Democratic party. This is not me talking; this is not Trump talking. This discussion is going on right now in the American Jewish community. It is a discussion that needs to be held. President Trump has stood tall with Israel in this latest Omar-Tlaib fiasco. The Democrats, on the other hand, have stood by those who would wipe the Jewish state off the map. By all means, let us discuss this openly.

Germany: Iraqis Run Amok in Regensburg

The Bavarian town of Regensburg is a charming little city on the banks of the Danube. It's main feature is the cathedral, which sits on the side of the river. It was also the scene this week of a riot, which apparently involved Iraqi refugees who are being housed in Regensburg. In fact, some of the action took place right in front of the cathedral. There may have also been some Germans involved though it is not clear.

One Fine Day on a French Airplane

It seems some Muslims in France are not content hijacking entire city streets to conduct their Friday prayers. Now they are doing their prayers on airplanes while in mid air-no matter how much they get in the way of others or disrupt flights.

In this January episode on a flight from Paris to Tunis, one passenger decided to do his prayers in the galley area where flight attendants do their work. When he finished, the man got up and punched out a flight attendant who was apparently communicating with the pilot about the issue.

So the plane had to make an unscheduled stop at Nice, where the nice man (no pun intended) was "escorted" off the plane. Naturally, his first exclamation as he was being dragged out of his seat was.... "Allahu Akhbar". You can view the videos below.

Bearded Ladies: From the Circus to the Campus

You can't make this stuff up.

Back in the day when I was a kid, you had to go to a circus side show if you wanted to see a bearded lady (or tattooed one, for that matter). Nowadays, all you have to do is wander over to the nearest university campus. At least if you live in Berkeley.

That's because a group of female paleontologists at UC Berkeley (where else?) are putting up a bearded lady exhibit to show that women can be paleontologists too.

What surporises me here is that this "educational" venture is being put on by a science department as opposed to the Women and Gender Studies department, which is a real side show in itself. They probably could have supplied plenty of lady professors with real beards.

Open Arms: No Medical Emergency

Update on the status of the Spanish NGO ship Open Arms, which has been sitting off the coast of Lampedusa demanding entry into the Italian port.

Even though the Spanish government has offered to take them in, the NGO refuses saying that Spain is too far and after 17 days with the migrants at sea, they have reached the point where health issues have become critical.

A total of 27 migrants claiming to be minors were taken off the boat and examined by doctors. That determined that there was no health issue (and that most of them were not really minors.) Meanwhile an Italian judge ordered authorities to inspect the ship for health risks. They did so and determined that there was no sanitary-hygienic emergency on board the ship as claimed by the NGO.

Open Arms, inspection on board: "No emergency". Migrants jump into the sea

According to what we learn from the inspection on the Open Arms, ordered by the Public Prosecutor of Agrigento, no particular critical health and hygiene issues have emerged to trigger the emergency. The inspection was carried out yesterday to check the hygienic-sanitary conditions in the ship where there are 107 shipwrecked people. The migrants are piled on the deck of the boat , they sleep on the floor without any mattress, they cover themselves with sheets and tablecloths, and according to the NGO they are psychologically exhausted.

According to the report of the doctors of Cismo, there would be cases of scabies but at the moment, there are no institutional confirmations in this regard. It is certain, however, that no evacuation has yet been arranged. For 107 migrants, those left on the ship, it is the 17th day on board, with the Open Arms still at the end of Lampedusa, facing Cala Francese.

Obviously the controversy continues. "Imaginary patients, imaginary minors, now imaginary health emergencies ... The Open Arms NGO and its accomplices are reaching the height of the ridiculous, the Italians are good but not stupid". This was written by the Minister of Interior, Matteo Salvini, on Facebook.

"Day 17. Miserable. Miserable are those who use 107 human beings "without names" and volunteers as hostages to make xenophobic and racist propaganda. All those who permit this and make jokes of their pain are accomplices," says the NGO on Twitter.

Nineteen minors of the 27 taken off the Open Arms will be transferred to Porto Empedocle by ferry. The other 8, who have admitted being adults after the evacuation, will remain at the "hotspot" of the island subject to medical checks also to assess their real age.

We can no longer contain the desperation. We can no longer explain. There are no words. You are cowards. Hashtag a secure port immediately". That is what the Spanish NGO, Open Arms,(says) on Twitter, posting a video of 4 migrants who tried to reach Lampedusa by swimming, after throwing themselves in the water wearing life jackets. Three rescuers go after them and after having reached them, take them back on board the boat.

Why Did Rashida Tlaib Back out of the Israel Trip?

A lot of people on both sides of the Israel-Palestinian conflict are shaking their heads over Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib's flip-flop on visiting Israel. First, Israel refused to let Tlaib and her fellow Congresswoman Ilhan Omar enter the country because they are rabidly anti-Israel, promote the BDS movement, and basically advocate for Israel's destruction as a Jewish state called Israel. Then, Tlaib sent the Israeli Interior Minister a letter asking to be allowed in to visit her sick and elderly grandmother. She added that she would not promote BDS during her stay and would accept any restrictions the Israelis applied. The Israel Interior Minister relented on humanitarian grounds.

Twelve hours later, Tlaib announced that she would not go after all since she would not accept Israeli restrictions, which is counter to what was stated in her letter. The question begs: What happened between the Israeli agreement to let her in and her decision not to go after all?

I am not privy to any inside information, of course, but in my opinion, Tlaib must have gotten a lot of blow back from the pro-Palestinian lobby, organizations like CAIR, and her own community back home in the Detroit-Dearborn area. How dare she give in to Israeli conditions that she not agitate against Israel? Make no mistake: If you are part of the pan-Arab, pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel gang, you don't cross those people. No doubt Tlaib's letter to the Israeli Interior Minister was viewed by many as caving into Israel. That can be downright dangerous. Just ask Anwar Sadat. By going back on her earlier letter, Tlaib broke her word for all to see, but she kept the CAIR types in her corner complaining about the "injustice" of it all.

In the meantime, nasty Grandma Tlaib gave an interview to the press in which she damned President Trump over his alleged role in the whole affair. Too bad. As far as I am concerned, Tlaib and her granny can meet in some third country like Sudan or some other hellhole. Israel doesn't need Tlaib, and the US certainly doesn't need her grandmother darkening our shores.

Both sides are declaring victory here, but to me, it just underlines how much people like Tlaib and her ilk cannot be trusted. In my opinion, Israel was right to bar these provocateurs in the first place.

There is a term for it: Undesirable aliens. Rashida Tlaib fits the bill.

Hussam Ayloush Goes Ballistic Over Omar, Tlaib Ban

CAIR SoCal director Hussam Ayloush once told an interviewer that CAIR was an American civil rights organization that doesn't get dragged into Middle East affairs. (That was just before he blew up at the interviewer for mentioning the magic word, "Hamas".) Of course, CAIR consistently gets dragged into foreign affairs if it involves Israel. Now, the self  described human rights activist is all over Facebook and Twitter denouncing Israel for its ban on Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.

Oh, the humanity!

As usual, CAIR is always ready to engage in a marriage of convenience with American Jews who will criticize Israel. Their favorite group is Jewish Voice for Peace, an insidious organization of misfit Jews who link arms with groups like Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) and....well, CAIR. Then there is J Street, whose motto is "Pro-Israel, pro-Peace".  If J Street is pro-Israel, I am a pitcher for the LA Dodgers.

Of course, JVP and J Street don't give a whit about all the anti-Jewish slurs made over the years by Ayloush and other CAIR leaders around the country. This is a man who has publicly (and once in my presence) asked why people want to investigate mosques for radical extremism and nobody is talking about the "thousands of American Jewish men who go to Israel to join the IDF killing the people of Gaza." I tried to ask him about that statement when he recently spoke at UC Irvine (as part of SJP's annual hate week against Israel), but as he always does, he refused to answer it, preferring to go on the attack and trying to link me to alleged threats against him and his family.

One might think that CAIR should be flooded with letters demanding that they fire Ayloush, but that would be a waste of time since they fully have his back. After all, Ayloush's feelings are their feelings.

So let Ayloush cry all he wants about Israel's denial of entry to two fellow anti-Semites. Let him march with JVP and quote Marxist fools like Bernie Sanders. He stands with those who want to wipe Israel off the face of the map. He and his ilk have lost this round.

Juan Cole and Wind

I always knew University of Michigan comedian Juan Cole was a windbag, but here he proves it with a treatise on why off shore wind power is the energy source of the future. Actually, his co-treatise is that Donald Trump, his least favorite president, is an ignoramus and a loudmouth. It always comes back to that. In fact, that's what he says about Trump in his introductory paragraph. This is from his blog, Informed Comment.

Let me begin by saying that the whole question of power is out of my league. But nothing is out of Cole's league. He's an expert on everything!

As for all those scenic wind towers (The Kennedy family disagrees. They have long opposed having them ruin their view of the sea at Chappaquiddick, I mean Hyannis Port), I can't sit here and tell you they are ineffective (if the wind doesn't blow), or that they are a waste of time and money because, unlike Captain Cole, I am no scientist. Like Trump and everybody else not named Juan Cole, I am an ignoramus. I have heard reports of dead eagles who fly into the wind towers, but that might just be animal/bird rights wackos talking. Besides, we're talking about places like Wyoming (which doesn't have a shore-yet.)

I do know a couple of things, however: Whether we like it or not, there are many different sources of power, like water, oil, coal, nuclear, and anabolic steroids. Coal may not like Cole, I mean Cole may not like coal, but he should ask Hillary Clinton what happens when you go to West Virginia and tell everybody that they will soon be out of work and in need of re-training because she's going to shut down the Cole coal mines!

It doesn't take a scientist (like Cole) to tell me that COAL can be rather toxic. Just ask all those retired minors with black lung disease. Even I know that breathing in the pure thing (which I don't normally do) can lead to lots of bad things.

Cole points out that Denmark gets over 50% of its energy from wind.  Great. What about the other 40+%? Where does that come from?

Then Cole drops this curious passage into the body of his article:

"Kansas, Iowa and Oklahoma all get over a third of their electricity from wind. Kansas and Oklahoma have governments that are beholden to Big Oil and to a rigid Republican ideology that has ruined their education and social services infrastructure, so those states are not doing this out of ideology. Wind is good business."

I don't know when Cole became a fan of business, but no matter. If Kansas, Iowa and Oklahoma are getting one-third of their electricity from wind, great. Where are they getting the other two-thirds from? Well, in the case of Kansas and Oklahoma, it must be Big Oil because of those rigid Republicans and their ideology "that has ruined education and the social services infrastructure". 
Cole obviously envisions the day when we will all talk about Big Wind-in affectionate terms, of course.

In conclusion, I will not attempt to argue with the experts quoted by Cole from Earth.com, Axios, Cleantech, and Wind Power Monthly. Let's say wind towers are the wave of the future (although I'm not sure about having them the size of football fields). Fine. I'll go along with it as long as it can give us all we need, they are cost effective, and they won't kill eagles. Since I am not an informed expert like Cole, I don't know the answer to those questions.  And what is Cole's conclusion........?

Oh wait! He doesn't have one. He doesn't even have a concluding paragraph-unless it's that Informed Comment bonus video.
