That Confederate Flag in South Carolina (and Arkansas)

Now that the debate over the presence of the Confederate flag that flies in front of the South Carolina statehouse is in full swing, it is time to bring some perspective lest this become a Democratic partisan issue.

Item: SC Governor Nikki Haley, a Republican, is calling for the flag to be removed. In that, she is supported by both SC senators, Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham, both Republicans.

Item: If you want to know why it is flying there in the first place, look no further than former US senator and SC governor Ernest Hollings-Democrat. The below article in Red State not only gives us the backdrop for the flag in South Carolina, but also in Arkansas under former governor Bill Clinton.

So since Ms Clinton is now weighing in and calling for the flag to be taken down in South Carolina, hopefully, some intrepid reporter will ask her why she didn't support similar measures when she was first lady of Arkansas.

Just for the record, I also support taking down the Confederate flag in South Carolina and anywhere else it flies in southern state capitols. In the past, I have preferred to let Southerners decide this issue and I still do, but my hopes are that they will consign this flag to their museums. Only two flags should fly - the US and the respective state flags. The Confederate flag does not represent black Southerners.

Another Academic "Contribution" to Racial Understanding

No matter how many heart warming expressions of understanding and mutual support come out of Charleston in the wake of the horrific massacre of last week, MSNBC and academia can be counted on to pound home the message that America is a racist country where institutional racism still rules.

I disagree, and here is why.

When I was a child, it is true that there was racism and it was institutional especially in the South, where laws were in place to enforce segregation and second class citizenship for blacks. That is not true today. Discrimination is against the law and whites who try to discriminate against blacks do so at their peril. They risk losing their reputations and their jobs as well. The law is solidly on the side of blacks and other minorities when it comes to this issue.

I would invite the viewer to watch the video of the actual arrest of Dylann Roof in Shelby, NC last week and watch the reactions of the cops who took him down.

The truth is that there are racists in America just as in any other society. Our racists come in all colors, white, black, brown and so on. But they are a fringe element whose only tool is the violence carried out by Roof in this case. The law will deal with him I guarantee you. These people have no institutional power. 

The entire nation is grieving over what happened in Charleston and relieved that Roof has been captured. We will quietly applaud again when he is convicted and shed no tears when he is executed or spends the rest of his life rotting in prison.

I cannot share the extraordinary sentiments of the victims' families who have expressed forgiveness for Roof. But contrast their reactions with those of dividers like Yolanda Pierce.

Academic Vulgarity Highlighted

My colleague Cinnamon Stillwell has written a great piece for American Thinker in which she highlights the vulgarity that many of our Middle East studies professors engage in when dealing with their adversaries. Naturally, there are some familiar figures featured like UC Irvine's Mark LeVine and UC Riverside's Reza Azlan. Stillwell illustrates how these characters resort to angry four-letter words when confronted by those who disagree with them.

But wait a minute! Could this be the same Mark LeVine who lit into me with a profanity-laced tirade in front of his own students when I called him an "anti-Israel activist" at UC Irvine a few months back?

Then there is the pride of UC Riverside, Reza Aslan, a self-styled intellectual. I attended (and videotaped) the referenced speaking event on Islamophobia at UCR. I asked him during the q and a whether he would dismiss all those Coptic Christians in Egypt, the Christians in Syria and Iraq, the Baha'i in Iran and the Jews in Europe as simply being "Islamophobes". He replied affirmatively to my question saying that just because somebody was treated badly by a Muslim doesn't give them license to be bigoted against Muslims.

Stillwell's article goes on to include intellectual "luminaries and celebrities" like Juan Cole, Steven Salaita and others. As for Cole, I saw him speak on October 16, 2014 at Cal State Long Beach. That was the time a student asked him about all the Brits like "Jihad John" going to join ISIS. Cole responded by calling British Prime Minister a racist and Islamophobe for alerting the British public that some 400 British Muslims had joined ISIS-out of a population of 4 million- a minuscule number. It seemed to me at the time that 400 ISIS men returned to the UK could wreak a lot of havoc. Since then I believe the number has gone up to 1,000 give or take a few.

Not having head the "pleasure" of seeing the others babble in person, I will close here. Suffice to say, it seems to me that Middle Eastern studies in the US mostly consists of biased, agenda-driven people, who in most cases, have probably been educated beyond their intelligence. When confronted with inconvenient facts, they resort to f-bombs and sh-bombs. What an example for their students.

There. I didn't even resort to bad language, did I?

Sign the UC Stakeholder Petition

Recently, I co-authored a letter with AMCHA Initiative's Tammi Rossman-Benjamin to the University of California asking them to treat anti-Semitism with the same seriousness as they treat other bias incidents. The letter, which was signed by over 100 UC faculty members,  also asked UC to consider adopting the US State Department's definition of anti-Semitism. UC President Janet Napolitano has indicated she supports the latter request and plans to introduce it at the July Regents meeting.

To be sure, there is organized resistance to this coming from the pro-Palestinian forces on campus including students, faculty and their Jewish stooges (Jewish Voice for Peace, etc.)

You can help in having our voices heard by signing the enclosed letter to the UC administrators. It is called the UC Stakeholders' petition. If you are a student, alumna, faculty, employee or even a California tax-payer concerned about what is going on in our public universities-which you   are  paying for- you have a stake in this matter.

Campus Anti-Semitism Who Did Not Sign a Letter to University of California Regents

The below article in the LA Jewish Journal concerns a letter signed by 32 organizations sent to the UC Board of regents expressing concern about anti-Semitism on UC campuses.

What is just as noteworthy is the absence of certain Jewish organizations in signing this letter. No Hillel chapter is included. Nor is any chapter of the Jewish Federation of North America. Nor is the Anti-Defamation League. Nor are so-called Jewish organizations like J Street, Jewish Voice for Peace or the New Israel Fund included.

The reason depends on the organization. Either it is because they are hostile to Israel (NIF, JVP, J Street), or they are unwilling to speak out about campus anti-Semitism because they know it is chiefly derived from pro-Palestinian and Muslim forces (Hillel, Jewish Federation and ADL).

They should all be ashamed. Either they have contributed to campus anti-Semitism or they have left Jewish students to their own devices in dealing with it.

UC Undocumented Students Demand Their "Rights"

This is a little dated (May 15), but the issue isn't. Janet Napolitano, the hapless president of the University of California, held a "summit" last month on the "problem" of  undocumented students within the UC system, when a group of said students stood up and demanded their rights.

Pick a country. Any country. Go there and overstay your visa. Then enroll in a university. After that, stand up when the president of that university speaks and demand your "rights". You will be on the next plane out of that country-after a stay in the local hoosegow for processing.

You students who are not in the country legally. Stop whining. Go to the local immigration office and start working with them to legalize your status. Your "demands" are getting tiresome.

And I wish Napolitano would stop kow-towing to  who are not in the country legally. Yes, most of them were brought to this country by their parents when they were too small to know what was going on, but that does not entitle them to make demands on anybody.

This is heroin (noun). The adjective for heroin is not "heroic", at least not in English. I don't know about Arabic although I am beginning to wonder.
